  3. Checklist for Writing a Resume • Keep it to one page • Use short phrases in a bullet format, rather than paragraph format • Make it visually appealing and easy to read, with a professional looking font.(Not too much or too little, white space.) • Type should be no smaller than 10 point; and no larger than 12 point. • Make sure your resume will pass the “messy desk” test – your name and contact information will stand out (in a positive way) from all others on the hiring manager’s desk. • List the sections of your resume in order of the importance of those sections. Education will usually be first. • Be consistent in your format and use of bold, CAPITALIZATION, italics, etc. This includes the way you present dates on your resume. • Avoid underling, as it interferes with many lower-case letters.

  4. Content • Make sure your email address is appropriate, such as mwilliams@hotmail.com • Objective Statements: (Optional) Should be a simple brief statement that expresses your career goals. Good Example: An entry level laboratory research position Bad Example: A challenging position with a growth-oriented company. • Spell out B.A (Bachelors of Arts) • Include your GPA if 3.0 or above • Utilize a skills section to show language competencies, technical and computer skills. • Do include volunteer work. • Begin each bullet point with an action word.
