What is Masking Tape And Why is It So Popular?

Masking tape is one of the most popular, cheap and handy construction tools. What people usually think is just a tape that has been used for masking their buildings or walls. But the actual meaning of masking tape is much broader than that. Masking tape has been around for a long time. How long? Since basically the beginning of time, because tape is tape, right? 1. Well yes and no. Masking Tape has actually been around for quite a while and has developed significantly over the past century. It has gone from something that we can only think of as “tape” to something that many people make special purchases of, due to its high demand. What is masking tape? Masking tape is a pressure-sensitive adhesive that comes in a wide range of colors, patterns and materials. It’s primarily used for painting — to cover trim and windows, for example — but it’s become a favorite tool for crafters as well. The tape can be used to make everything from party decorations to picture frames. Who invented masking tape? According to the National Museum of American History, Richard Drew invented the first masking tape in 1925. Drew worked for 3M at the time, and his invention was initially used by car manufacturers to keep paint out of door handles and other nooks and crannies when repainting cars. By 1949, 3M had developed masking tape as we know it today (in other words, not just for

  2. painting), and it quickly became one of the most popular items in the company’s inventory. How do you use masking tape? Masking tape is an adhesive tape made of a thin and easy-to-tear paper, and an easily released pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is available in a variety of widths. It is used mainly in painting, to mask off areas that should not be painted. The adhesive is the key element to its usefulness, as it allows the tape to be easily removed without leaving residue or damaging the surface to which it is applied. The most common use for masking tape is painting. The tape resists paint bleed-through but can be cleanly removed when no longer needed, even if the paint has dried. In construction, painters often use a thinner blue painter's tape instead of standard masking tape, since blue painter's tape can be left in place for up to 14 days without damaging wood trim or leaving a sticky residue on it after removal. Masking tape provides some protection against electrically energized conductors because of its thickness and non-conductivity of paper and adhesive. 5 Amazing Things To Know About Masking Tape Masking tape is a great tool to have in your home. It is very versatile and can be used for many things aside from its usual purpose in painting. Here are five amazing things you can do with masking tape: 1. Make a pen stand If you are always misplacing your pens, this hack can help you keep them together. You will need a glass or jar and some masking tape.

  3. 2. Make a bookmark This is for those who still love to read the old-fashioned way – on paper! And it is also a great gift idea for your friends who are bookworms. Just cut out a strip of masking tape that’s long enough to fit on the edge of your book and then fold each end over to make a sticky tab. Then decorate it, and voila! You have your own personalized bookmark. 3. Make labels This is especially useful if you're in a business where you're selling products and need to label them accordingly. You can make easy and cost-effective labels by using masking tape and a marker pen to write on them. This will give your products a professional look while saving you money on expensive labels. 4. Masking tape has a mild adhesive. Masking tape doesn't stick as well as duct tape or electrical tape. It works great for hanging decorations because it's easy to remove without damaging the surface underneath it. Sometimes masking tape comes in different strengths depending on how well they adhere to surfaces, so take that into consideration when buying it for your next project. 5. Masking tape can help protect your rims If you have rims on your vehicle, then this is something that can be damaged very easily when driving down steep inclines. To prevent this from happening you should use masking tape in order to protect the rims from damage. You won't need a lot of masking tape either – just take a few strips and place them over the rim. This will help to protect it against scratches and dents.
