IEEE’s Cloud Computing Initiative • Cloud computing already has widespread impact across how we access today’s applications, resources, and data. • IEEE has been providing a venue for cloud-related activities for years. • The Cloud Computing Initiativewas created for a focused IEEE presence by: • Leading a well coordinated and collaborative effort on cloud opportunities across IEEE • Leveraging “One IEEE” – resources and expertise from across the IEEE • This presentation focuses on how the IEEE Computer Society is involved with cloud computing in general, and how our activities support the IEEE’s Cloud Computing Initiative (CCI)
Publications • IEEE’s Cloud Computing Initiative is calling for the introduction of two new publications: • IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing • Peer reviewed articles published that provide innovative research ideas and applications results in all areas relating to cloud computing. Topics include: • IEEE Cloud Computing Magazine • Targeted to broader, more general interest community • Proposal in development phase
Magazines Cloud computing articles have appeared in the following IEEE Computer Society publications: • Computer • Software • Internet Computing • IT Professional • Computing in Science & Engineering • Security & Privacy
Magazines Recent articles have included: • “Environmental Modeling for Automated Cloud Application Testing,” Zhang, Ma, Lu, Xie, Tillmann, de Halleux. • “A Distributed Access Control Architecture for Cloud Computing,” Almutairi, Sarfraz, Basalamah, Aref, Ghafoor. • “Testing in the Could: Exploring the Practice,” Riungu-Kalliosaari, Taipale, Smolander. • “Evaluating High-Performance Computing on Google App Engine,” Prodan, Sperk, Ostermann. • “Logical Data Models for Cloud Computing Architectures,” Samba. • “Cloud@Home: Toward a Volunteer Cloud,” Distefano, Puliafito. • “Threat as a Service? Virtualization’s Impact on Cloud Security,” Tsai, Siebenhaar, Miede, Huang, Steinmetz.
Magazines We are currently writing a proposal for the new magazine envisioned by CCI, dedicated to cloud computing: • peer-reviewed articles that provide innovative research ideas, applications results, and case studies. • raise awareness of research and application challenges in hardware, software, and security and privacy. • will include news, conference reports, and other columns and departments. • will offer IEEE societies with interests in cloud computing the opportunity to provide content and/or promote their related products and services, and raise awareness of IEEE activities in cloud computing generally.
Transactions • Transactions on Cloud Computing under review for 2013 launch. The Computer Society is leading the development and publication of this new transaction. • In addition, existing CS transactions also focus on topics related to cloud computing: • Special Issue on Cloud Computing in Nov. 2012 issue of Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems • Transactions on Services Computing celebrating its 5th year of publication this year
Conferences • The Cloud Computing Initiative calls for enhanced cloud focus to complement existing conferences, and the creation of new thought leadership conferences where needed: • IEEE Cloud Computing for Emerging Markets • 11-12 October 2012, Bangalore, India • Latin America Cloud Congress • 26-27 November 2012, Porto Alegra, Brazil • Asian Pacific Cloud Congress • 8-11 November 2012, Shenzhen, China • North America Cloud Symposium/IEEE Globecom, 3-7 December 2012, Anaheim, California, US • Cloud Computing World Forum, 2013

“Virtual Conferences” “24 Hours in a Private Cloud” • CS was a major sponsor (with Microsoft, Dell, and the Cloud Security Alliance) of a 24-hour virtual conference held in May 2012. • ComputingNow EIC DejanMilojicicwas one of three keynote speakers. • Multimedia “virtual booth” at http://bit.ly/24hipc • Participants heard from top industry and technical professionals from around the world to better understand the private cloud technology solutions that are available today. • Interactive conversations with technical professionals
Education • The CCI calls for the development of new educational opportunities relevant to cloud computing: • eLearning modules • Continuing education • Video of conference presentations, section/chapter talks
Professional Education The IEEE Computer Society’s Professional Development Committee, part of the Educational Activities Board, is developing a series of training and education courses in the field of cloud computing.
Standards • IEEE is leading the way on two standards: • P2301 Cloud portability, commonality • Designed to provide an intuitive road map for application portability, management, and interoperability interfaces, as well as for file formats and operating conventions. • P2302 Cloud to cloud interoperability • Defining the topology, protocols, functionality, and governance required for cloud-to-cloud interoperability.
Special Technical Communities (STCs) A new community dedicated to cloud is starting up within the Computer Society: • STC on Cloud Computing - http://stc-cloud-computing.ieee.net/ • Co-Chairs: Michael Kozuch and Rick McGeer • Social Media - LinkedIn (http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Special-Technical-Community-on-Cloud-3980796) • Featured Content: Open Source Cloud Consortia This STC is currently recruiting board members, developing a newsletter for its members, and working to technically cosponsor a conference.
