See Ms. Bose (in the library) or pickup interest form in counselor center.
Why challenge yourself in high school? • Increasing rigor throughout high school is critical to be prepared in College and Career after High School. • Math is often a major factor for College and Career, we recommend taking Math all four years! • Biology and Chemistry are often requirements for many four year colleges and universities. • Colleges often view World Language as a core academic subject • Taking Advanced Placement (AP), College in the High School, and/or Running Start classes shows colleges that you’re a dedicated student and ready for College-level work
What are colleges looking for? • Rigorous classes, GPA, ACT/SAT test scores • Strength of senior year classes • Consistent high GPA or upward GPA trend • Extension of academic interests outside the classroom • Leadership in work, volunteer, clubs/sports/drama/music • The college essay - initiative, motivation, self-discipline, persistence, ability to overcome hardships, strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity, creativity, special talents …
Options to add rigor to your schedule • Challenging classes beyond the minimum requirements • WANIC Program - Washington Network for Innovative Careers – See Mrs. Hansen in Library • Running Start • AP Classes and/or AP Capstone • Classes that offer college credit (“College in the High School” and “Tech Prep”)
Suggestions for AP classes • BALANCE is KEY! • One AP classes is equal to a College Level Course. They are fast-paced, over more material than regular classes and require independent work like research and analysis. • Consider a gradual increase in the amount of AP classes. Consider taking 1 or 2 more than last year. • What subjects do you enjoy most? We offer 30+ AP courses in all core subjects and electives? Choose AP class(es) in subject areas you most interested in and want to gain a deeper level of understanding.
WaNIC (Washington Network for Innovative Careers) WaNIC offers students rigorous class choices in career areas beyond the academic high school selections. Participating students provide their own transportation and spend part of their school day in another high school. Interested?
