History and Geography • Territories in and around the Carribean • Colonized by the United Kingdom • Currently known as Anglophone Carribean • 1958 – 1062 organized into the West Indies Federation • Current British territories are: Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos Islands

History • 1674 Sir William Stapleton established the first federation in the British West Indies – British Leeward Islands, he acted as a first General Assembly • By 18th century each island kept its own Assembly and laws • 1833 Dominica was added to Leeward Islands until 1940 • 1871 British government passed the Leeward Islands Act through which all islands were under one Governor and one set of laws • 1833 – British Windward Islands were consisted a colony which broke up in 1958

West Indies Federation • Short lived federation • Existed from 1958 to 1962 • Consisted of several Caribbean colonies of the United Kingdom • Its intention was to create political unit that would become independent (similarly to Australia) but before that could happen, the federation collapsed

  6. Sport • Main sport in West Indies is cricket • Most of the countries and territories take part in combined cricket team called the West Indies cricket team or Windies

  7. British Caribbean Community • Residents of the United Kingdom who are of West Indian origin • Most West Indian writers found necessary to settle in the UK, the USA or Canada in order to make a living from their work • Therefore V.S. Naipaul (Nobel Prize in 2002) is considered British writer rather than Trinidadian writer • Other well know authors – George Lamming, Jamaica Kincaid

Canada - Geography • The name comes from ancient iroquois word “kanata”, which means “village” • Second- largest country in the world • 33 million people • Toronto (5.5 mil), Montréal (4 mil), Vancouver (2.5 mil) • Capital Ottawa (app 1 mil) • Population very ethnically diverse • The Inuits (Eskimos) inhabit norther territories

History of Settlement • First settlements from Europe – French and English fur traders (beaver) - 15th C – Quebec • 1776 Declaration of Independence – many British settlers loyal to UK fled the new United States to north • 1 July 1867 establishment of a confederation of Canadian provinces – Canada gained independence from Britain

Political System • Similarly to Britain, the parliamentary system consists of two chambers: House of Commons and Senate • Official head is still British monarch who ratifies government • The monarch is represented by Governor General who is appointed by the elected prime minister of Canada • 1982 – Pierre Elliot Trudeau (PM) drafted and passed first Canadian Constitution – meant full independence from Britain

Canadian Administration • 10 provinces + 3 territories (bilingual) • The Maritimes (four provinces on the Atlantic) • Quebec – the only French-speaking province • The Old Upper Canada (Ontario is the original English province) • The Prairies (three provinces west of Ontario) • The Pacific Canada (BC, Vancouver) • The Far North (three territories)

Culture • Historically influenced by British, French and Aboriginals • National symbols are – maple leaf, beaver, Canada Goose, • totem pole and Inukshuk • National sports – hockey, lacrosse, curling and football • Known actors, born in Canada – Jim Carrey, Carrie-Anne Moss, Leslie Nielsen, Donald Sutherland
