  1. American Dream • What do you think the “American Dream” is? • What is your “American Dream” for your life (own a house, go to college, have a family, etc.)?

  2. What motives might have prompted the earliest European explorers to sail to North America?

  3. New World • If you were given the opportunity to move today to a “new world,” would you go? Why or why not? Your family and friends would not travel with you. You would not know the language, and it would be a different climate and culture.

  4. Help Wanted • Wanted: Leader capable of governing people in life-threatening crisis. Ability to mediate disputes and maintain order in the face of chaos; good interpersonal and communication skills essential. Community outreach efforts require overcoming language and cultural barriers. Basic bookkeeping, homebuilding, farming, trading, and political skills a must. Salary cannot be guaranteed; no job security. • Would you apply for this job? Why or why not?

  5. Puritan Life • The Puritans had few possessions, dressed uniformly, and frowned on creative expression. • What are potential benefits from a society such as this? What are negative consequences? Examine both.

  6. Appeal • Are you more swayed by emotional or logical appeal? In other words, do your emotions govern your decisions, or are your decisions based on intellectual reasoning?
