The Digestive System • The main function for the digestive system is to break down foods by chemical and mechanical digestion.
Chemical Digestion • Saliva helps break down the food piece into semi-solid lumps • Salivary amylase enzyme helps in the process of digesting carbohydrates and mucus • Mechanical digestion does it’s job then then chemical digestion mixes the bolus with the digestive juices that come from the stomach lining cells • After several hours of chemical digestion it is then moved into the rectum by the small intestine
Mechanical Digestion • Food particles reaches the mouth that then becomes mechanical digestion • Bones and muscles • Taking in food from the mouth, esophagus to the body is called ingestion • Ingestion process is a mechanical digestion • food reaches the stomach it then goes through the process that is called peristaltic contractions to help churn the food bolus. • After the mechanical digestion process it is then handed off to chemical digestion
Organ: the stomach • Supports the digestive system • Breaks down foods with mechanical and chemical digestion • After braking the food down with your mouth its goes to the stomach • Releases food into small intestine • The fours parts of the stomach are cardia, fundus, corpus, & the pylorus • The main cells in the stomach are mucous, parietal, chief , and g cells.
Organ: The Liver • Regulating the composition of blood • Breaks down aging red blood cells to release protein • Converting blood into bilirubin • Dependent organs on liver are pancrease, gallbladder, and the digestive system • De-toxins the blood so you don’t get poisoned tissues • Diseases of the liver are jaundice, cancer, hepatitis, and fibrosis
Organ: The gallbladder • A sack in the corner of the liver • Has contents call bile inside • Bile is mixed in with your foods • The bile is pushed along the bile duct into the duodenum • The bile that is let of by the gallbladder is produced into the liver • The liver is dependent on the gallbladder • The digestive system is dependent on the gallbladder • All organs working together maintain a constant internal environment called homeostasis • Diseases that can be caused to the gallbladder are Gallbladder Cancer, Gallbladder Polyps, Bile Reflux, and Cholestasis
Organ: the large intestine • Turns the waste into a solid waste material which is called feces • Absorbs nutrients from the waste material • Bacteria helps digestion • Waste material absorbs water to become solid • Waste material is stored into the rectum for several hours • Diarrhea happens when you eat food that was bad • Constipation is when the solid waste material is stored into the rectum for 15 hours
Organ: The Small intestine • Brakes down waste material for nutrients • Is connected to the stomach and the large intestine • 20 feet long • The thing that the small and large intestine has in common is that they both are used to help digestion • Two parts to the small intestine are duodenum, jejunum • The longest part of the digestive system • Enzymes acts like scissors to cut large nutrient chains into smaller chains
Why the h.b.c need to keep our system • Can’t get nutrients that your body needs to keep you alive • You can’t swallow so you will get blockage of waste materials • Without the stomach there would be no place to store the food • Without the gallbladder there won’t be any bile to be mixed with your foods to help digest • It’s pretty clear that without the digestive system and the organs in the digestive system your body will not function properly and with the blockage caused by no digestive system you could die.
