What is Dbvisit? Keeps Oracle standby databases automatically in synch with primary databases Can be used with Oracle Standard Edition (SE) or Edition One Provides real disaster recovery for Oracle databases Affordable alternative to Data Guard Does not need Oracle Enterprise Edition (EE) Dbvisit is a product of Avisit Solutions Limited (www.avisit.co.nz)
Exact copy of main database in a remote location • Is held up to date by applying changes from main database • In the event of a disaster, standby database becomes active • Users are transferred to standby database to continue operation Standby Database overview
Dbvisit features Simple to use and simple to install (less than 30 minutes) Dbvisit supports multiple Standby Databases using the same primary Database Works with all versions of Oracle (8i,9i, 10g and 11g) Compresses archive logs before shipment Uses standard ssh (secure shell) or rsh to transfer logs Automatically recovers from network outages Supports Oracle RAC (Real Application Cluster) Features automatic graceful switchover
Dbvisit supported platform Works with all versions of Oracle (8i,9i, 10g and 11g) Microsoft Windows* (NT4, 2000, 2003, XP) Linux (Intel and Itanium) UNIX (Solaris, AIX, HP-UX) *Dbvisit includes SSH server software for Windows
Supports single and multiple node standby databases Dbvisit with Oracle RAC Multiple node standby databases shown
Also called role reversal • Used for planned outages • Primary database transitions to a standby database • Standby database transitions to a primary database • No data loss • Works for Oracle 8i to 11g • After outage transitions back to original state Dbvisit features Graceful Switchover
To offset the load on the primary database when running large reports, reports may be run on a reporting database. Dbvisit - Reporting Database Dbvisit can automate the process so that the reporting database is available for reporting during the day. At night the reporting database is automatically updated with the latest changes.
Dbvisit benefits Runs as executable not as broker, agent or daemon Precise control over when Oracle logs are transferred No other software or libraries needed Completely non-intrusive to the Oracle RDBMS engine (no PL/SQL packages) Dbvisit has many uses: Centralised Disaster Recovery server Reporting database Point in Time Snapshot Capturing (Batch processing) Shadow Database Management (for error resolution)
Data Guard limitations Data Guard is complex to configure Each Data Guard version is specific to each version of Oracle Oracle Enterprise Manager is needed to use Data Guard effectively Data Guard uses SQL*Net ports to transfer logs Precise timing of transfers is not possible (no snapshots) No automatic notification included init.ora database parameters need changing Expensive (needs Oracle Enterprise Edition (EE)
Using Dbvisit Runs in background as well as interactively Simple commands to learn Commands are same on primary as on standby server Dbvisit can stop, start and open (standby) databases Set and forget (Dbvisit takes care of itself)
Using Dbvisit (ii) Dbvisit shields DBA from complexities of managing standby databases Automatic notification when errors are detected or set thresholds are reached Dbvisit can resend Oracle log files if required Dbvisit help is available on the command line
Dbvisit is flexible Notification thresholds can be set Dbvisit features can be turned on or off Dbvisit is configurable to suit individual needs Dbvisit can use ssh or rsh Any available compression method can be used Can be plugged into any monitoring tool init.ora database parameters do not need changing
Dbvisit repository Information can be used to report on following: Duration of each log transfer to standby server Duration of compress step Archive log gap
Dbvisit installation - configuration Installation through wizard based menus Only needs to be installed/configured on primary server Normally installed and configured in less than 30 minutes Dbvisit will suggest defaults for most variables Database does not need to be restarted
Dbvisit architecture (i) Server based (not client server) Dbvisit runs on both primary and standby server independently Installation replicated to standby server automatically Scheduled from any scheduling tool (example cron) on primary and standby server To ensure robustness, Dbvisit employs comprehensive error checking
Dbvisit OS manager OS Interface Dbvisit architecture (ii) Dbvisit Logging Manager Dbvisit Error Manager Dbvisit apply log manager Dbvisit transfer log manager Dbvisit Oracle SQL manager Oracle Interface
Dbvisit extra – Archive Log Module Fully automates the management and monitoring of Oracle archive logs Runs on both the primary and standby server Warns if space thresholds are reached Deletes Oracle archive logs after set number of days Ensures Oracle archive logs have been transferred to standby before removing
Dbvisit support Databases using Dbvisit are fully supported by Oracle Full technical support for Dbvisit is provided Updates and enhancements for Dbvisit are provided Fast turnaround time for support issues Dbvisit creates trace files which can be sent for analysis and investigation
