  1. THE GP RETURNER SCHEME Dr Vik Mohan Associate Dean SW Peninsula Deanery 30th April 2009

  2. Purpose of the scheme • To support GPs who have had a break from UK general practice for >2-3 years in returning to work • To ensure that these GPs are fit to resume working in the NHS as independent practitioners

  3. Process • GP makes contact with us/we receive referral • If deemed suitable, GP goes through an assessment process • MCQ • Simulated consultation • Interview

  4. Process • If refresher training deemed appropriate, GP offered a place on the scheme • GP looks for training practice with vacancy • Undertakes a period of refresher training in the practice, under the supervision of a trainer

  5. Assessments • WPBA • COTs • CBDs • AKT of nMRCGP • Sign off by trainer that passed assessments • PCT decision to reinstate onto the Performers’ List

  6. Finances • Scheme being run without any central funding • We pay a trainer’s grant, provide the same support as for a GPST • Pay the GP a small study allowance • Request that the practice pays a salary

  7. Case Study 1 • GP suspended by the GMC for drug and alcohol offenses • Fully rehabilitated, under care of Occ Health • 3 year break, has undertaken lots of study during this time • GMC have requested the GP go through the Returner Scheme

  8. Case Study 2 • GP decided to take up aid work overseas • Worked in infectious diseases and HIV, running a large hospital in Rwanda • After 10 years, has decided to return to UK general practice • Never had an appraisal, never used an internet learning module

  9. Case Study 3 • Female GP, 3 consecutive periods of maternity leave, followed by becoming the main carer for an ill relative • 6 year break from GP; has tried to keep up to date by reading the BMJ • Wanting to return to work, but lacking in confidence

  10. SUMMARY • GP Returner Scheme is designed to enable GPs to return to work safely • Use robust tools to make the necessary assessments • Currently not centrally funded • Fulfils an essential role for this forgotten group of doctors
