  1. Reading Strategy Visualizing Characters and Setting

  2. Good readers VISUALIZE • They imagine characters, events, and settings to help them understand what’s happening. • They pay attention to the images that form in their minds as they read.

  3. This reminds me of my trip to Australia this past summer. I had to visualize what I would see on my tours by reading the descriptions. • “Get up close to Australia's famous wildlife on a day trip to Phillip Island. You'll see the little penguins, koalas, wallabies, kangaroos and seals on this full day tour from Melbourne.” • “Take a Great Ocean Road day trip and experience one of the world's great coastal drives.”

  4. Where the Wild Things Are • "That very night in Max's room a forest grew and grew and grew until his ceiling hung with vines and the walls became the world all around."

  5. What did YOU visualize?

  6. Let’s Practice!!!! • As I read an excerpt from Chapter Four from the very awesome book “Red Kayak”, I want you to visualize what is happening in this very suspenseful scene? • Can you visualize the setting? • Can you feel what the character is feeling? Listen carefully…..

  7. Etch and Sketch Draw and writeyour thoughts about what you are seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling.
