About the Author • Marc Prensky • Author of Teaching Digital Natives: Partnering for Real Learning • Author of Brain Gain: Technology and the Quest for Digital Wisdom
Abstract • This article describes how technology is no longer “something we need in addition to mental activity; technology is now part of mental activity.” There is a new curriculum being thought up rethinking all of the subjects and what to teach future students. Technology-Enhanced Learning is the most powerful thing and Prensky strongly believes that we should move on from our old ways of teaching and enforce technology in schools all the way.
A New Way of Thinking • Technology isn’t about “stuff” • Ex: laptops, iPads, cell phones, other software • Technology is an “extension” of our brains • A new way of thinking • Human mind • Is not the most powerful thing • Human capabilities aren’t enough anymore • Only still useful for passion and empathy
Rethinking the Curriculum • Should students still be taught to: • Write by hand? • Calculate in their heads? • Read? • Define words and concepts? • Prensky says: No!
Test Preparation • SAT/ACT apps • Teachers no longer have to “teach to the test”
Database Usage • Siri • Wolfram Alpha • Most powerful data analysis tool in the world
Technology as a Learning Tool We need to start teaching students how to use: • Spreadsheets • Calculators • Mathematica • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugRuESa_cu0 • All force students to figure out how to structure a problem
Technology as a Learning Tool cont. • No longer a need for: • Spelling • Grammar • Translation
Trivial to Powerful Technology • YouTube • Tutorials • Personal Educational Movies • Twitter • Tweet instead of writing long, detailed essays • Skype • Ask questions to professionals • Immediate feedback
Rethinking the Curriculum • No longer having core subjects • Math • Science • English • Social Studies • Converting straight to all technology, no mix • These subjects are thought of as “outdated”
The New Curriculum • Effective Thinking • Effective Action • Effective Relationships
Effective Thinking • Creative and Critical Thinking • Portions of Math and Science • Logic • Persuasion • Storytelling • Thinking Process
Effective Action • Entrepreneurship • Goal Setting • Planning • Persistence • Project Management • Feedback • Knowledge of how to improve communities
Effective Relationships • Emotional Intelligence • Teamwork • Ethics • Peer Groups • Communities • Work Groups • Citizenship • Politics • Communication
Effective Accomplishment • Annually Updated and added to • Growing Portfolio • Ranges from: • Small Projects • Individual Projects • Group Projects
My Opinion • I agree with that the three new subjects would be very beneficial to students in the future. However, I think that “old subjects” should still be taught because I believe they are still essential.
