The report identifies gaps in data availability and knowledge for water quality assessment, highlighting areas for further work and collaboration. Project partners can utilize the findings for focused data compilation and analysis, aiding in the selection of common metrics based on biological quality elements and pressures. The report also outlines specific knowledge gaps for different water categories with detailed information provided for interested parties. Future synergies include workshops, data sharing, and analysis to enhance understanding and speed up the assessment process.

REBECCAReport on gaps in data availability andin knowledge Compiled and edited by Anna-Stiina Heiskanen and Angelo Solimini JRC
REBECCA gaps report To identify: • major gaps in data availability • major gaps in the current knowledge with respect of relationships between key biological and pressure indicators and/ or chemical status indicators. • justifications for the selection of biological quality elements and parameters/ metrics for the further studies. Conclusions: 1) key areas of further work within the REBECCA, 2) areas where further experimental or monitoring work would be needed due to lack of data or quantitative understanding
Gaps in the data availability for REBECCA • Mediterranean and alpine lake types • Large part of the Mediterranean coastal & transitional types (with exception of Italy) • Data on concentrations of toxic chemical substances in combination with biological quality element indicator data • Macrophyte, phytobenthos and benthic invertebrate data from lakes & coastal waters • Fish data from lakes (and transitional waters – not included in REBECCA) • dose-response relationships for combined pressures
Specific knowledge gaps have been identified for all surface water categories Detailed information available from the report (Or discussions during the coffee break)
How this report can be used? • Project partners: help focusing of the further work on data compilation and analyses • End-users within the WFD CIS • members of the working group 2A on ecological status, • GIG expert-networks • To help in the selection of potential common metrics based on availability of functional relationships between biol-QE & pressures • To help the GIGs to focus IC-process
When will the report be available? • Highlights in the 2nd REBECCA Newsletter – End of October 2004 • Final draft January 2005 • Publication March 2005
Further synergies - 1 • REBECCA End-user Workshop • particularly for GIG Coordinators • January 19-20, 2005 • JRC, Ispra • In addition to REBECCA presentations, we would like to invite a few GIG coordinators to present there experiences and needs of information • GIG coordinators are invited to all other REBECCA Workshops, and hopefully also REBECCA representatives to GIG workshops
Future synergies - 2 • Could data collected by GIGs be used by REBECCA to fill in gaps n data availability? • Common analysis of data? • Requires a detailed planning by REBECCA Work Package leaders and GIG Coordinators
Future synergies - 3 • Reference conditions: • REBECCA will produce a report on reference conditions in lakes: • methodologies how to assess reference conditions • what indicators could be used • available in January 2005
Future synergies - 4 • REBECCA tries to speed up the work: analysis of relationships between water chemistry/pressures and biology • Results will be disseminated throughout the progress of REBECCA and the IC process 2004-2006
