1. The Commutative Property • It means that the numbers can be put in any order & you still get the same answer. • Example: 2+4=6 4+2=6 • Example 2: 8•5=40 5•8=40 • Onlyaddition and multiplication are commutative • Why subtraction and division aren’t commutative: • 8-6=2 6-8=-2

Associative Property • No matter how the numbers are grouped the answer stays the same. • Only addition and multiplication are associative. • Ex: (5+6) + 3 =14 5 + (6+3) = 14 (is associative) • Ex. 2: (8-3)-2=3 8-(3-2) = 7 (not associative)

Distributive property • The distributive property says that multiplying a number by a quantity is the same as multiplying the number by each number in the quantity. • This works with multiplication over any operation. Ex. 2(4•5) = (2•4) (2•5)
