  2. We are one of the least energy efficient nations in Europe [EST] We recycle just over a fifth of our waste, one of the lowest rates in Europe [Defra]; and we throw away a third of our food [WRAP] On average in 2005 UK citizens made 625 trips by car in 2005 and 15 by bike [DfT] In the UK

  4. What is the Sustainable Schoolsstrategy? The Sustainable Schools strategy encourages schools to take on board sustainable development in their everyday work, achieving educational excellence alongside the goals of: • healthy living • environmental awareness • community participation • global citizenship

What is expected from schools • Reframe school improvement plans to build a sustainable school • Use the resources, programmes from third sector organisations and awards schemes • Demonstrate impact on: • pupils’ knowledge and understanding of sustainability • The school’s environmental performance • Be an example to their community 11
