  1. Media Non fiction L.O. To be able to use connectives to display a balanced argument.

  2. Your task is to devise a speech which you will give to year 7 students during their PSHE session in tutor time. • The speech is to argue the reasons why people should not be striving for a ‘size 0’ figure. • You are to consider the different sides of the argument (reasons why some people may want to look this way and then the consequences of the dieting).

  3. The key thing about writing an argument is that you present both sides and come to a clear conclusion. It's not like arguing with one of your friends, when you just say what you think. Instead, when you write an argument you have to show you are reasonable and can consider the different sides. The one thing that can help you to achieve this is connectives.

  4. To show a balanced argument you can use connectives like: Even though Although However but In spite of this

  5. Although I enjoy cycling, I much prefer swimming. Healthy eating is important, however, some people can take it too far! The park might protect nature, but it costs a lot to keep clean. Thousands of people each year die of lung cancer. In spite of this, many still choose to smoke.

  6. Using connectives Match the two halves of the sentences. Then use an appropriate connective from the box below to link them. Try to use each connective at least once.

  7. although, however, but, in spite of this Even though • The children still misbehaved. • They still lost to Spain. • They didn’t play their best • He was still thrashed by • Hendman. • ________ Portugal played well, • 2. _______ the teacher entered the room, • 3. Federer’s a good player • _______________ • 4. England has some great • players.____________
