English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provides English language instruction that will allow a student to gain improved proficiency in listening, speaking, writing, reading and comprehension so that they can experience success in their content courses and in social contexts both inside and outside of school. Students from other cultures often become acclimated to U.S. culture through language-based instruction. The Georgia Department of Education provides the following guidelines for identifying students who may be identified as an English Language Learner (ELL): • Students whose native/home/first language is other than English • Students who have difficulty speaking, reading, writing or understanding the English language to the extent that their language skills would be a barrier to their success in the classroom

  6. ESOL Goals:The ESOL teachers work in collaboration with classroom and other special programs teachers to support the acquisition of language and content skills. The ESOL program promotes each student's appreciation of their ability to perform a wide variety of intellectual and physical activities. The ESOL program encourages the student's positive recognition of a variety of cultures, recognizing similarities and differences.

  7. How do students qualify for ESOL? • Language Survey • Language test-W-APT • Score 1-4 • ACCESS< 5 in February • Reading, speaking, writing and listening

  8. How do we serve them? • K-3 45 minutes every day. • 4 Two segments of 50 minutes a day • K-3 pull out and 4th-5th inclusion.

Test Participation Committee • ESOL students are provided accommodations. • Monitored students are provided accommodations based on SST meetings. • Accommodations need to be given in the classroom throughout the year. • We have to meet with parents, teachers and administration to discuss accommodations based on individual needs.

  16. 100 Mile Club • www.100mileclub.com • We will be running/walking the mile on the field! • $10.00 per child/includes registration for one year and a t-shirt • Students set personal goals, learn team spirit, perseverance, poise, confidence, and get fit! • Students earn their t-shirts at 25 miles! • A gold medal is awarded to each child that reaches 100 miles at our year end ceremony!
