  8. Timeline: The road totoday’s legal system… 2350 BC Urukagina's Code This code consolidated existing laws laid down by Mesopotamian kings. It indicated that the king was appointed by the gods and that ordinary citizens were allowed to know why certain actions would be punished.

  19. Civil Law vs. Criminal Law Sometimes the same act can be tried as both a civil and criminal case. Criminal cases require a higher standard of evidence for conviction than civil cases because the penalties are more severe. +
