Graduation Requirements • English (6 Credits) -English 9 (2 Credits) -English 10 (2 Credits) -Students may choose two English credits to fulfill English Requirement • Social Studies (6 Credits) -Civics 9 (2 Credits) -US History (2 Credits) -Students may choose two Social Study credits to fulfill Social Requirement • Math (6 Credits) -Algebra I (2 Credits) -Geometry (2 Credits) -Algebra II (2 Credits) • Science (6 Credits) -Physical Science 9 (2 Credits) -General Biology (2 Credits) -Students may choose two Science credits to fulfill Science Requirement • Physical Education (1 Credit) -Students can choose one Physical Education credit to fulfill Phy Ed Requirement • Computer (2 Credits) -Students can choose two Computer credits to fulfill Computer Requirement

  3. Testing Requirements • 9th Grade Test of Written Comprehension • 10th Grade MCA-II GRAD Reading • 11th Grade MCA-III GRAD Math (Alternative Pathway) Students who are not proficient on these tests have the opportunity to test at a later date.

  4. Programming Options for Earning HS Credit • Five Main Options There are five main options that students and parents can make to fulfill the Pillager High School graduation requirements. Students can start utilizing most of these options at the beginning of their Junior year in HS. Some options are available starting in grade 9.

Main Program Options • PSEO (Post Secondary Enrollment Options) • CIS (College in the Schools) -Option may be available to younger students • Honors Online through LSC • Traditional courses taken in the school building not for college credit • CLEP Testing (Earning college credit by exam) -Three to twelve college credits -$72.00 Per Exam

PSEO Option • Post Secondary Enrollment Options is a program offered through the State of MN that allows students free access to college credits. • Students may choose any college within the state of MN • Students must apply to the school they are interested in, and be accepted based on their individual college requirements. Private schools are different than Public schools, and may have their own requirements. • Typically students attend full-time at the college of their choice. However, students can choose to attend either full-time or part-time. • Wide variety of classes to choose from • Flexible schedule • Students can earn their AA (Associate in Arts degree) transferable to any college within the MNSCU system. • High School students are intermixed with college students and older non-traditional students. • PHS cannot communicate with the college about how a student is doing unless a signed written release of information is given to the college. Parents are not allowed access to academic records unless the student also signs a written release, regardless of the student’s age.

CIS (College in the School) • Students have the option to earn college credit through Lake Superior College while staying on the Pillager High School Campus. • Students are intermixed with their classmates and peers. Students can still participate in the full range of high school activities. • Students can earn their AA (Associate of Arts Degree, 60 Credits) without having to go PSEO and without having to take many online courses. • Communication is open between instructor and student. No release of information is needed. Taylor learning environment to student. • Students receive the benefit of having our high school teachers teaching their college course. • Students have every Friday off from their college class. Teachers have open hours on Fridays for students to receive extra help if needed.

Saving Money$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ • Right now, the cost of tuition at a MNSCU two-year college is $193.80 per credit (includes tuition cost and other miscellaneous fees). • If students were to receive their AA degree either through the PSEO program or through CIS you would save a total of $11,628.00 in tuition and approximately $2,000 in text book fees.

Online Courses • Infinity Online (AP, and “regular” classes) • Lake Superior College Online (Honors Online) • Central Lakes College Online (PSEO) • Can combine online college courses with CIS and work towards AA degree (Intro to College) • Must be able to work well independently • Must be proficient with technology and computers

  11. Traditional Non-College Credit Courses • Non-college credit courses are always offered to all students • Students may complete their graduation requirements through a variety of classes • Students may still take a college level course even if they do not wish to take the college credit (CIS)

CLEP Credits • Students are able to test out of certain subject areas and receive college credit if they earn a 50 (score range 20-80) or higher on the CLEP Test. • Fee associated with testing • $80.00 for the test plus admin fees $15-25.00 • CLEP offers 33 exams in five subject areas (History, Composition, Science & Math, Business, World Language) • Test Center Locations around MN • Who should take the CLEP exam? Students who are not able to take AP, CIS, or go PSEO can still earn college credits through CLEP. • Can earn from 3-12 College Credits • MNSCU accepts 50 or higher to grant credit • Private schools and the University of MN system may require a higher CLEP score to earn college credit.

  13. Making Choices and Options Available • What does my student have to do from now until their junior or senior year to take advantage of some of these options? • Continue to encourage your son/and or daughter to earn and maintain at least a B average (3.0) • Pre-entrance test is required. Students must pass both the Reading, Sentence Skills, and the Math at a certain level to register for college courses. • Accuplacer is required for Honors Online, PSEO, and CIS courses • PSEO Qualifications for CLC and may vary with each individual school. -CLC requires 3.0 Cumulative GPA Junior Year -CLC requires 2.5 Cumulative GPA Senior Year

MNSCU REQUIREMENTS • Before students are accepted into college they need the following coursework in high school • Four years of English, including Composition, Literature, and Speech • Three years of Math, including two years of Algebra, and one year of Geometry • Three years of Science, include one year of biological and physical science all with labs • Three years of Social studies • Two years of a single World Language • One year of Arts (Visual, Music, Theatre, Dance)

  15. University of MN Requirements • 4 Years of English • Three Years of Math (2015 U of M will require 4 years of Math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calc, Trig, Calc) • 3 Years of Science • 3 Years of Social Studies • 2 Years of a single World Language • 1Year of Visual and/or Performing Arts
