    3. Eligibility in the Local Context Path New eligibility path for students at the top of their class Recognizes individual accomplishments Returns UC to 12.5% rate of eligibility recommended by the Master Plan

    4. ELC Policy Specifics Students ranking in the top 4% of their high school class, having completed 11 specific courses of the 15 required “a-f” year-long courses by the end of their Junior year, will be UC eligible ELC program ranks students according to UC criteria, not on straight high school ranking Students must complete remainder of eligibility requirements

    5. “a-f” Units to be Completed for ELC 1 unit of History/Social Science 3 units of English 3 units of Mathematics 1 unit of Laboratory Science 1 unit of Language Other than English 2 units from the remainder of the “a-f” 2003 will include the new VPA requirement

    7. Campus Admission Policies for ELC Students UC Academic Senate added ELC as an additional academic criterion campuses can use in selection Campus selection policies are being considered and finalized

    8. ELC Updates Schools were informed of the number of students expected in the top 10% of its Junior class (UC requested 10% to correctly identify the top 4%) High school counselors and UC evaluators were hired and trained to evaluate student records for ELC Each evaluation was reviewed by at least two trained analysts Transcript evaluation continued through summer

    9. UC Excited About New Path Recognizes academic achievement at highest level in each school UC wants to be present in each high school in California Processed 20,000+ transcripts this summer — over 800 schools participated Campuses working on outreach efforts

    10. The Visual and Performing Arts Requirement (VPA) UC faculty believe VPA is an important part of education and a vibrant part of UC and California life Addition of VPA requirement aligns UC and CSU subject requirements for freshman eligibility

    11. How the Subject Requirements Will Change Current 2 units “f” Requirement Changes to: 1 unit in VPA to become the new “f” requirement 1 unit in “College Preparatory Electives” (the current “f” requirement) will become the new “g” requirement

    12. VPA Effective for Freshmen Entering UC in 2003 VPA will be implemented as follows: 2003 - 2 semester courses in two areas of VPA 2004-2005 - 2 semester courses within the same area 2006 - 1 year long course, second half of course continuation of the first half

    13. Guidelines for VPA Courses Acceptable courses need not have a prerequisite, but are reviewed for content and should follow the following Five State Standards for VPA: 1) Artistic Perception 2) Creative Expression 3) Historical and Cultural Context 4) Aesthetic Valuing 5) Connection, Relations and Application

    14. VPA Review Process Received approximately 3,000 course outlines from approximately 300 schools during the January-March submission period Decisions made by at least 2 experienced UC analysts. Faculty reviewed questionable courses Schools were notified of review outcome in Spring 2000 Schools who missed the January-March timeline are submitting VPA courses during the “a-f” update for the academic year 2000-2001 VPA Courses certified for the 2000-2001 year will also be acceptable if taken in the 1999-2000 academic year

    16. Fall 2001 New Eligibility Index Eligibility in State-wide Context Path A new eligibility index incorporating SAT II subject test scores goes into effect beginning with freshman applicants for Fall 2001 The new index is one in a series of changes in freshman eligibility requirements adopted by UC Regents in March 1999 The index is required of all students meeting eligibility requirements in a state-wide context

    17. New Eligibility Index Specifics The revised index includes high school GPA plus SAT I and SAT II test scores The minimum GPA required for eligibility is reduced slightly to 2.80, and all students – even those with the highest GPAs – are required to meet minimum test score requirements The test score formula is: [SAT I composite] + [2 x (SAT II Writing + SAT II Mathematics + third required SAT II)]

    18. New Eligibility Index Example A student who earned 1100 on the SAT I, 550 on the SAT II Writing, 600 on the SAT II Math and 500 on a third SAT II test would have an index test score of 4400: [1100] + [2 x (550+600+500)] This same student earned “a-f” GPA of 3.5. Minimum total test score required for 3.5 is 3120. The student has met the Eligibility Index

    19. New Eligibility Index Test Details The SAT I composite is defined as the highest combined mathematics and verbal scores from a single sitting The ACT can be used in lieu of the SAT I. An ACT to SAT I score conversion table is available in your publications Highest individual SAT II scores, from any sitting, will be considered

    20. New Eligibility Index More Test Details Students are required to complete all tests by the December sitting Students are encouraged to take tests early. Tests can be taken several times UC takes the best scores SAT II tests should be taken soon after courses completed in the areas covered by the tests
