  2. Why We REFLECT A quick way for me to assess your understanding and potential ability to use information presented to you in class is to have you write a REFLECTion on the class period/activity. It helps me to see to what degree you are engaged.

Qualities of a USEFUL reflection • Honest • Focuses on what was learned • Assesses process • Poses hypothetical questions • Not “perfect” • Not a summary –content is understood NMWiley 21 August 2012 Today’s lesson didn’t enthuse me– or the students-- as I had hoped. The students seemed listless and reluctant. I noticed that there were “loopholes” I hadn’t covered anticipated that could have made the process clearer to some students (providing parts of speech review, for example). I’ll have to admit, being late to school didn’t help my own enthusiasm– it threw off my preparation for the bell. My transitions weren’t as smooth as I would have liked. The number of unprepared students really bummed-me. I was a picture. Not a research paper. Seriously. I wonder what would could have led them to have all of their homework? I mean, I provided a daily schedule with the assignment written right there? Are they already done with school? What can I do increase their participation?

  5. TRY it: Reflect in a half page of text upon a time in your life where a quality reflection proved useful in reaching a goal more quickly– this could have occurred “mentally” as well as in writing.
