What is GPS ? A navigation device used to determine a particular point of location on sea, land and air; anytime, anywhere and any environment with high degree of accuracy.
GPS Segments • Satellites • At least 24 satellites are orbiting around the world and sending signal continuously • Signals are unique for each Satellite • Signal contains the location of the satellites and the transmitted time • Control and monitoring stations • monitor the orbiting of satellites • ensures that GPS satellite orbits remain within limits
GPS Segments • GPS receivers • GPS receivers do not transmit signals to the satellites • Receivers measure the distance of satellite by calculating the transmission time and receiving time • Receivers use regular Quartz clock while satellites use atomic clocks • Receivers’ primary job is to identify at least four satellites at any time
Position Determination • Trilateration Method • At least three satellites are required to locate a position on earth • While orbiting around the earth each satellite sends signal to a circular area • When two spheres intersect each other, it covers a wide range of area • The third satellite’s sphere helps to find the exact location of the receiver on earth surface Please see note for citation
Signal Frequency • L1 Frequency • L2 Frequency • Use civilian receivers • 1575.42 MHz • Use Standard Positioning Code (SPS) • Transmit data at 1.023 million chips per second • Use military receivers • 1.2276 Frequency • Use P-code andencrypted P(Y) code • Transmit data at 10.23 million chips per second
Signal Modulation • Pseudo Random Code • PRN is used to identify the satellite that is transmitting signals to the receivers • Almanac Data • Almanac data represents the orbital position of a satellite • Ephemeris Data • Ephemeris data is used to accurately locate a GPS satellite at a particular point in its orbit in a specific time
Error Factors • Ionosphere and Troposphere delays • Signal Multipath • Receiver Clock Errors • Orbital Errors • Satellite Geometry/Shading
