  1. SUBJECT AREA/ SUGGESTED GRADE LEVEL: Language Arts & Visual Arts- Multimedia Storytelling (6th-12th) Page 1 of 2 Standards Addressed in this Lesson: Middle School: produce narrative (e.g., fictional, personal) to engage readers by establishing and developing a plot, setting, and point-of-view that are appropriate to the story (e.g., varied beginnings, standard plot line, cohesive devices) (GPS) (6LA_F2009-73) analyze mythologies from different cultures (GPS) (6LA_B2009-18) organize an interpretation around several clear ideas, premises, or images (GPS) (6LA_J2009-86) Major Art Modality Utilized: Visual Arts, Technology Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Visual-Spatial, Interpersonal Lesson Abstract: Students will make a PowerPoint adaptation of a cultural story from a Native American tribal origin story as a part of a study in Native American history and tradition. Materials Needed: Digital cameras, scanners, computers with PowerPoint for student small groups. Procedures: 1. Begin this project by assigning students randomly to groups (3 to 4 students per group). Each group will be linked to one of the major Native American tribes to base their research upon. 2. Students should read several different stories or myths from their chosen tribe and select one to re-tell in their multimedia story project. Within their story, the students should find opportunities to integrate 4 digital photographs, 2 scanned collage art pieces, and 3 images from the Internet. 3. The digital photographs the students take should help construct the characters or settings of their story. The collages can be used as background locations or specific characters.

  2. SUBJECT AREA/ SUGGESTED GRADE LEVEL: Language Arts & Visual Arts- Multimedia Storytelling Page 2 of 2 Standards Addressed in this Lesson: High School: identify social studies reference resources to use for a specific purpose (GPS) (SSUH_B2007-20) examine 17th century life in the early Spanish, French, Dutch, and English colonies, and why these colonies were founded (GPS) (SSUH_C2007-30) identify messages and themes from books in all subject areas and relate from one subject area to those in another area (GPS, HSGT) (LA11_D2005-30) relate a literary work to non-literary and/or other texts from its literary period and historical setting (GPS, HSGT) (LA09_B2005-10) Procedures: (Continued) 4. Students should work to integrate the images into a PowerPoint to tell the story using words and recorded sounds to fully experience the story. Students may wish to view the online tutorials to enhance their PowerPoint animation techniques. This part of the process may take several class periods over several days. 5. Students should have a day to share their finished creations along with a short discussion of their research and how they used the information they learned to adapt their story. Assessment: Teachers should determine “benchmarks” to gauge student progress at several points throughout the process. I recommend checking progress when the research is completed, when the digital images and scanned collages are completed, and when the PowerPoint is being assembled.
