  2. …A Brief History In 1857 the NTA (National Teachers Association) was first founded, with an initial membership of about 100 In 1870, the NTA merged with the American Normal School Association, the National Association of School Superintendents, and the Central College Association, to become the NEA

  3. …Mission Statement The mission of the NEA is to advocate for professionals in the field of education, unite its members and the nation, and to give every student the education needed to prepare them to succeed in the world Principles such as equal opportunity, professionalism, collective action, and democracy guide the NEA’s mission

  4. …Membership The NEA is comprised of a variety of education professionals, from higher education faculty and staff to administration. Students can also become members of the NEA. You can join the NEA through its website, www.nea.org

  5. …Issues • Common Core State Standards- aims to clearly illustrate what students are expected to learn • School Safety- aims to secure a safe, healthy, and peaceful learning environment for students • No Child Left Behind Act- The NEA supports the ideas established in NCLB, which is the current incarnation of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act. • However, the NEA believes that the NCLB requires revision in order to be put in to practice

  6. …Issues The NEA opposes the Student Success Act which was passed by the House of Representatives in June 2013, because it erodes the historical federal role in education of targeting resources to marginalized students The NEA strongly believes that, especially in these economically difficult times, investing funds in education makes sense both fiscally and for public policy
