  6. First Settlements While watching the video clips record the successes or failures of the first settlements in America in your comparison chart on handout 1A.

  7. First American Settlement-Jamestown, Virginia 1607 • Jamestown 1607 • Draw name, date, and a star like the one on the map • Reason for settlement: economic profit • Draw a money sign $ next to the star Jamestown

  8. Second American Settlement- Plymouth, Massachusetts 1620 Plymouth-1620 • Draw name, date, and star like the one on the map • Reason for Settlement: Religious freedom • Write “religious freedom” on the colony of Massachusetts

  9. The settlements grow in population. More people travel from Britain to the new areas in America forming colonies for religious freedom or to make a profit through land ownership. Making money off of land required labor. The first form of labor were indentured servants. Indentured Servants: people from Britain who agreed to work for 5-7 years without pay for passage to the American colonies.

  14. The Great Awakening(Write definition top of 1Z) A period of religious revival where preachers traveled all over the 13 colonies preaching to huge crowds about religious matters and authority One of the most influential preachers was George Whitfield
