  2. Independent Reading novels work • A 2 paragraph review of your book • It should include: • A BRIEF summary • The argument the author makes (theme) • How it is made (ethos, pathos, logos) • With textual evidence (quotes) • Did you like it???? • DUE MONDAY

  3. Your Turn • Read “Love” • Create your frayer model on LOVE • On the back analyze the argument (theme) AND the types of arguments (claim, evidence, warrant structure) • State contrasting examples…if there are any

  4. Hero • On your own, create a Frayer model on the word “Hero.” • Lets talk about it • What criteria did you come up with????

  5. HEROISM • The Carnegie Hero Award

  6. Hero Criteria • Look @ your hand out….the bullet points are the criteria by which the Carnegie committee judges heroism • Lets go over them for a sec

  7. Scenario • Read the scenario….. • Lets talk about it • Should Curtis Dawson get the award? • USE THE CRITERIA TO JUDGE HIM

  8. Reality… • Curtis Dawson received the award in 2005

Borderline… • Read Roger Terrapin’s story • On the back of the sheet • On your own, decide if he should get the award or not • Write your decision (CLAIM, EVIDENCE, WARRANT) • Claim: Criteria • Evidence: Examples • Warrant: a statement that explains why a piece of evidence makes a claim factual.

  10. PAIR/SHARE • Pair up with a partner and convince them • Make note of your discussion in the “discussion notes” portion of your sheet • Don’t forget to detail the types of arguments made • INCLUDE: did your partner change your mind???? • SHARE WITH THE WHOLE CLASS
