Basic data • The United States spreads from the Pacific oceans to the Atlantic, and her neighbors are Canada in the north and and Mexico in the South. • The United states are federation of the 50 states. It is 9 million squere kilometers big with 300 million inhabitants. • Every country has its main city, but the capital of the USA is Washington D.C. • Currancy – dollar • The United States has no official language, but English is the most common language for daily interaction. Alongside English- French is in Louisiana, Spanish is in New Mexico and Hawaiian in Hawai.

6. Americans • Some nations, specially Chinese and Italian keep their traditions and languages and live in small communities. 80% are white, 12% are black, 9% are hispanic, 4% asian and only less than 1% native.

7. American indians By 1500 America was occupied by developed nations with long traditions, the original Americans.

Native Nations • The various tribes developed different lifestyles. • In the north and on the coast they lived by fishing. • On the Great plains Sioux and Comanche settled in villages and grew crops. • Others lived as nomads, they sheltered in tipi camps and during the summer they hunted the herds of bufallo. • Today Native Americans number about 2 million (0,8 percent of total population)

9. New settlers • Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. Later ships slowly brought European settlers from Spain, France, England, Ireland, Holland,Germany or Sweden to built the New World. • Native Americans suffered from warfare against European colonists, displacement. Up to 80 percent of native population may have died due to European diseases. • Slave sale: • Trade triangle • About half a million slaves from Africa • were brought over to America • during the 17th and 18th centuries • to work in gold mines, on the fields • of sugar, tobacco, indigo or cotton • plantations.

10. July 4,1776 • In the 18th century there were thirteen colonies along the Atlantic Coast under British rule. They have to pay high taxes. The colonists wished to rule the country by themselves. They started War of Independence and won. • The Declaration of Independence signed in 1776 in Philadelphiaestablished The United states of America. • In 1787 The Constitution of the United States (basic laws of the country) was adopted including Bill of Rights. • In 1789 George Washington was elected the first President of the United States.

11. Slavery Slave auction Slave • The history of slavery in the United states began soon after Europeans first settled in. • Building the New World needed workforce. Indian slavery was widely practiced in 17th century by Spanish or English. But natives were not numerous enough and were quickly decimated by European diseases, hard work and little food. • The Atlantic slave trade brought ower a half million Africans to America and it is sometimes called „maafa“ – meaning holocaust or great disaster. Part of the Western Africa became known as „the Slave coast“. • The history of slavery ended in practice in 1863-65 with Abraham Lincoln´s Emancipation Proclamation.

12. African Americans segregation • Even after the end of slavery American blacks were hampered by segregation and education. • In the late 1950s and early 1960s African Americans led by Dr. Martin Luther King used protests to discrimination in voting, education and public accomodation.

The late 19th century – period of heavy immigration • Industrialization brought many foreign-born workers. • Now there live hispanics, Cuban Americans, Chinese, Japanesse, Italian, Russian, Asian immigrants Jews and others. • Besides legal immigrants there are more than 5 million people without permission in the United States.

Religions One of the first permanent settlements in what became the North American colonies was founded by English Puritans, Calvinists who had been outsiders in their homeland, where the Church of England was established. So Protestants were the dominant religion in the early days. Today America is one of the most diverse religious societies in the world.

17. Religions In 2005 Protestants of all denominations numbered more than 100 million; Catholics, 67 million; and Jews, 6 million. The Islamic faith also has about 6 million U.S. adherents, many of whom are African-American converts. It is estimated that the number of mosques in the United States -- today, about 2,000 -- has more than doubled in the last 15 years. 19. Pop music Modern pop music was born in the USA when two different kinds of music came together. The first kind was the music of Africa which was brought to the USA by black slaves. The second kind was taken to the USA by white settlers from Britain and Irelanad. Rhythm was the most important thing in black music, while white songs had a strong melody.

20. Pop music In the 1950s Elvis Presley brought to world Rock and Roll. In the 1960s, rock music was developed in several different directions by British bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who, and by American stars like Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. In the 1970s produced glamour rock (bands like Queen, disco) and born Heavy metal bands like Metallica, Black Sabath (characteristic loud music). In the 1980s American dance music was fashion with hip hop, house, garage music. In the 1990s popular band are Oasis, Nirvana, Spice girls and Backstreet boys. Then most people listening rap, which came from black people.

Jazz The music, which originally sprang from a conglomeration of the most variet European cultural influences set by a coluorful mixture of imigrants nationalities and then a new element, the folklore of the African blacks. Its first sprouts are spirituals ( working songs of the plantatious labourers) and gospels (spiritual songs of the blacks, allready Christian. Both kinds of music have a biblical content, originally expressing discontent with the standing of the black man in his new home. At the top of the 1930’s swing was a popular form of jay played by the bands of Glen Miller, Woody Hermann, Benny Goodman. The black musicians Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.

23. AMERICA´ S POPULAR SPORTS Sports are very important for American people. They are part of the culture. More people go in for sports in the USA than in Europe. The Americans prefer different sports to the Europeans.

24. American football Baseball Basketball American football is not what we call „football“ here in Europe. The Americans call Europan football „soccer“. This is popular TV sport, very many people watch it. But there are just 16 games per year in the National Football League witch is the major professional American football league. It is a similar sport to rugby. American football is a fast, exciting game. Baseball is called the national sport. There are many teams that play almost every day from April to October. Baseball is quite an old sport. Basketball was invented in Massachusetts so it is truly an „American“ sport. The NBA is one of the major professional sports leagues in North America. The 30 teams start playing in April. It is the most popular team sport. Basketball is a very fast sport. Tall players are often better than small players.

27. There are more then 375 national parks in the USA. The national park system was created by President Theodor Roossevelt and Congres in 1872.

28. Two famous national parks located in California are Yosemite with its waterfalls and Yellowstone, the oldest and best known of the United States.
