  2. Your POV - Ready for Winter? • Ensure you POV is ready for the cold • Check all fluids • Oil • Antifreeze • Windshield washer • Replace windshield wipers if needed • Check tires • Proper Inflation • All-Season or Winter • Tread depth • Winter Survival Kit

  3. Winter Safety • The winter will start immediately, there are two important concerns • Get acclimated to the weather • Winter driving conditions and techniques • Plan ahead for weather changes • Leave early, arrive alive!

  4. Black Ice • Dangerous because you can’t see it • Common areas you find black ice: • Bridges • Overpasses • Underpasses • Shaded areas • Most any road in the Eifel during winter • What do you do if….. • Do not panic! • Don’t make sudden changes in speed/direction • Ease off of the accelerator • Steer in the direction the rear of the vehicle is skidding

  5. Winter, Summer or All-Season Tires? • Winter or All-season tires are required when driving on SNOW and ICE • Driving without = €20 fine • Driving without & hinder another motorist = €40 fine • The "M+S" or "M/S" indicates that the tire has some mud and snow capability • Most radial tires have these markings; hence they have some mud and snow capability • No studded tires are permitted

Snow Tires • Do not mix tires - install four snow tires • Do not use old worn tires - snow traction is reduced • Proper air pressure = Improved performance • Snow or All-Season tires required in Winter Tires marked with the pictograph of a peaked mountain with a snowflake meet snow traction requirements, and are designed for use in snow conditions
