2. Holocaust • The term Holocaust means “sacrifice by fire” and refers to the Nazi’s persecution and planned slaughter of the Jewish people.

3. When did the Holocaust begin? • The Holocaust began in 1933, when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany, with the Nazis, of which he was the leader. • The Holocaust began on April 1, 1933, with the boycotting of all Jewish-run business.

4. Why did the Holocaust begin? • The Nazis didn’t like anyone different from themselves or who didn’t agree with them or their ideas. • They began discriminating against Jews and later many other groups in society.

5. Who did they target and what did they do to them? • The Nazis targeted Jews, gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses and the disabled. • The people they attacked they either killed, enslaved or put them to work and left them to starve.

6. Star of David • During the Holocaust the Nazis ordered Jews to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothing so that Jews could be easily recognised and targeted.

7. Where did the Nazis put Jews? • The Nazis had different kinds of camps including concentration camps, labour camps and prisoner-of-war camps. • The Nazis put most Jews and others into concentration camps where they made them work and then killed them. • Extermination camps were also known as “death camps” and were built for the purpose of killing large groups of people.

8. Concentration Camps • 11 million people were killed in concentration camps around the world. • 6 million of the 11 million were Jews. • 1.5 million children were killed in concentration camps.

9. Auschwitz • Auschwitzwas the largest concentration and extermination camp built. • At Auschwitz1.1 million people were killed.
