What does the Center for Careers in teaching offer? • The Center for Careers in Teaching (CCT) provides: • Comprehensive academic advisement for California State Fullerton undergraduates planning careers in teaching at the elementary, middle, high school levels or special education. • Academic counseling support to future teachers currently attending one of our partner community colleges and who plan to transfer to California State Fullerton. • Information about the California State Fullerton integrated teacher education programs. • Information and support for the freshman program known as the Freshman Future Teachers program.

What is the Center for Teacher Education? • The Center for Teacher Education is a resource center which offers information, academic advisement, and support for students interested in pursuing a career in teaching with an emphasis in preparing students for employment in local public elementary and secondary schools.  • Its mission is to assist Santa Ana College students to achieve their fullest potential as students, prepare them to transfer to the CSU, UC, or Independent University of their choice, and become excellent teachers and leaders in the field of education.

What is a Bachelor’s Degree? • A bachelor’s degree is an undergraduate degree earned at a university for completing a sequence of coursework that takes approximately four years. • GE requirements (51 units) • Taken at a community college or university • Major requirements (units vary) • Taken at a university • Complete at least 120 units, depending on academic area

What is a Teaching Credential? • A teaching credential is a license issued at the state level specifying what subjects and students you are authorized to teach. • Having a credential in one state or country does not mean you can teach in another state or country. • It is issued after you have completed a teacher preparation program and are recommended by the University. • Teacher preparation programs are usually one year in length and include coursework and student teaching • In California, all teaching credentials are issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

What are the different types of credentials? • Multiple Subject - Credential that authorizes teaching in a self-contained setting in grades K-12 (but usually K-8) including preschool and adults. • Single Subject - Credential that authorizes teaching in a departmentalized (such as mathematics or social studies) setting in grades K-12 including preschool and adults • Education Specialist – Credential that authorizes teaching in a variety of disability areas.

What are the requirements for a credential? • To earn a teaching credential, you must demonstrate proficiency in basic skills, subject matter competency, and pedagogical knowledge and skills. • Basic Skills – demonstration of basic educational skills, demonstrated by passing the CBEST • Subject Matter Competency – demonstrated by completion of a Bachelor’s degree and passing subject examinations • Pedagogical Knowledge and Skills – demonstrated by completion of a teacher preparation program, including student teaching

What is the CBEST and when should I take it? • The California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) is used to assess and verify acceptable proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics skills in the English language, basic educational skills that are needed and used by all school practitioners. • The CBEST must be passed before entering a credential program in California. Students can take the CBEST at any time; however, it is recommended that students complete the exam soon after passing freshman composition and college-level mathematics courses. • More information on the CBEST can be obtained at the website: www.cbest.nesinc.com/

What is the Streamlined Teacher Education Program? • STEP is an integrated teacher education program that allows students to simultaneously earn a bachelor's degree and the preliminary teaching credential within 135 units (compared to the usual 120 units for a bachelor's degree plus 35 or more units for the preliminary teaching credential). • Currently, California State Fullerton offers a multiple subject STEP, and single subject STEPs in English/language Arts, Science, Social Science, and Math are in development.

  25. What are the phases in STEP? For Child and Adolescent Development and Liberal Studies majors who intend to teach elementary school, STEP is divided into three phases: • Phase I/Pre-STEP- students follow a prescribed set of general education courses and pass the CBEST. • Phase II/STEP - begin major, finish general education, and the prerequisite classes for the credential program, and pass the CSET. • Phase III/STEP-Credential- Admission to the Multiple Subject Credential Program. • http://www.fullerton.edu/cct/Mult_Subj/msstep.htm

What if I attend a community college first? • Tell your community college academic advisor that you want to be a teacher. • Visit preparation centers at the community college, if available. • See the CCT field representative at the community college campus. • Look for announcements on a CCT seminar at the community college campus. • Register as Pre-STEP student- this may result in special admission consideration upon transfer.

  28. Activity 1: Ask a Teacher Schedule an appointment with a teacher or student teacher at your school and ask them the following questions. Write the answers in your blue book. • What college or university did you attend to get your degree? Your credential? • Why did you make those choices? • What was your credential program experience like? • What type of advisement did you obtain through the process?

Activity 2: Reflect on Learning • In your blue book, write a paragraph describing your teaching inclinations at the moment. • Would you prefer to teach elementary, middle, high school or in special education? Why? • In your blue book, create a list of questions you have about the credential process.
