  1. Registry Showcase Project Kim Davies «kim@centr.org» Council of European National Top Level Domain Registries ICANN 23, Luxembourg 10 July, 2005

  2. Best Practice for ccTLDs • Various Best Practice initiatives within CENTR over the years • Two areas: • Governance Best Practice • Operational/Technical Best Practice • True best practice is “highest standard” • Politically problematic • Fear ccTLDs will be benchmarked against • Should rather be something to strive toward

  3. Minimum Standards • Define minimum standards for ccTLDs? • Solves political problem • Not really useful • Particularly in Europe – most would meet such standards

  4. Solution: • Develop a “registry showcase” • Resource site filled with feature projects documented • Documented in detail so experiences can be reused by other registries • Conceptual overview • Implementation notes • Contact details • Benefits: • Not a best practice – removes problem of being “judged” • Removes value judgments on what is good or not • Useful, unlike minimum standards • Regularly updatable, unlike formally approved standards document

  5. Sampling of Projects

  6. Zone Updating • Nominet UK • Handles ~3.5m domains, 15m RRs, 300k updates/day • Zone build/reload was slow (~2hrs) • New system • writes out changes in per minute blocks • applies changes with IXFR • Changes rigorously confirmed before application

  7. DNS Resilience • DENIC • New authoritative nameserver setup • Serves .de (~9m domains) with <5% utilisation • Mix of IPv4 Unicast, Anycast and IPv6 Unicast • OOB management • Mixture of software (BIND8, BIND9, NSD) • Rolling reloads performing at each site • Unnoticeable • Compiles with RFC 2870

  8. IDN Location Service • DK Hostmaster • Navigation aid for MSIE web browsers • No wildcards, zone synthesis • System of providing wayfinding with CNAME records • www.[binary] CNAME idn-redirection-site • Binary form is IDN is prevalent local encodings • UTF-8, Latin 1, Latin 9

  9. Registry Implementations • DNSSEC • EPP • ENUM • IDN • IRIS • Liberalisations / move to R-R environment

  10. Related Resources • CENTR Surveys • Conducted up to 1 per week • Complete spectrum of registry operations • Now performed online automatically with live results • Huge corpus of operational/policy oversight • Most members can now reach in and find answers on what they need • Policy Repository • New proposed project • Store various registry policies • Will aid in harmonisation work • Goal is common EPP requirements, poss. extensions
