  5. Social changes. • The Statue of Liberty arrives in 1885. • 150 white miners attack Chinese coworkers in the Rock Springs massacre-1885. • The Home Insurance building becomes the first skyscraper. -1885

  7. Social Changes • The first basketball game is played in the Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA, 1891. • 1894-First Coca-Cola bottle sold • 1895- W.E.B Du Bois becomes the first African-American to receive a PhD from Harvard. • In 1900, a coal mine explosion kills 50 miners in West Virginia.

  8. POLITICAL CHANGES James Garfield defeats Winfield S. Hancock to win the 1880 presidential election

  9. Political CHANGES July 2, 1881 – James Garfield is shot by lawyer Charles Julius Guiteau. He survives the shooting but suffers from infection of his wound, dying on September 19.

  10. Political changes • May 6 1882– The Chinese Exclusion Act is the first important law that restricts immigration into the U.S.A. • August 3 1882 – The U.S. Congress passes the 1882 Immigration Act.

  11. Political • January 16, 1884 – The Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, reforming the United States civil service with the aim to end the spoils system, becomes law. • March 4, 1885 – Grover Cleveland succeeds Chester A. Arthur as President of the United States

Political • November 6 – U.S. presidential election, 1888: United States Democratic Party incumbent Grover Cleveland wins the popular vote, but loses the Electoral College vote to Republican challenger Benjamin Harrison, therefore losing the election • March 4 – Grover Cleveland, 22nd President of the United States (1885 – 1889) is succeeded by Benjamin Harrison (1889–1893).
