  3. Alabama’s Regions • Alabama has 5 major regions. • A fall line separates the highland regions from the lowland regions. • A fall line is where rivers form waterfalls or rapids because of a drop in elevation.

  4. 1. Highland Rim Region • located in the Northwestern corner of AL • includes land on both sides of the Tennessee River

  5. 2. Cumberland Plateau Region • Southeast of the Highland Rim • Land in this area rises to more than 1600 feet and drops to about 500 feet

  6. 3. Ridge & Valley Region • Birmingham is located in this region. • Helps form the southern tip of the Appalachians

  7. 4. Piedmont Region • Land is lower than the Ridge & Valley region • Cheaha (chee-haw) Mountain (the highest point in AL) is located here

  8. 5. Coastal Plain Region • Largest region in AL • Belongs to a larger landform region called the Gulf Coastal Plain region
