A Research Based Investigation into a Pertinent Teaching Strategy By: Jamie Arnott
Think-Pair-Share As a society, we have made the decision to forcibly institutionalize all children for approximately 15 years. Why do you think we do this?
The Big Picture A function of the school system (as has been frequently alluded to in previous presentations) is that we are responsible for producing citizens that will generate a just and functional society.
What is “Society”? Humans are an inherently social species. Across cultures and circumstance they will always congregate into groups (families, friends, workplace organizations.) Society is how these groups form, function and interact.
What traits will benefit society? Literate citizens. Self Reliant citizens. Citizens with life skills. Intrinsically motivated citizens. Citizens who have received early interventions to solve potential life long problems. Critical thinking skill. CAN YOU THINK OF ANY MORE?
The Big Idea The ultimate goal is that our students will become people that contribute positively (or at least NOT contribute negatively) to the groups that they exist within in society.
The Value of Phys-Ed Within structured play, the ideas of: Teamwork Citizenship Problem solving Affective Outcomes (joy) Creativity Collaboration Democratic Principles Can be reinforced.
Phys-Ed Models SKILLS BASED MODEL HOW to perform the sport? CONCEPT BASED MODEL WHY do certain approaches lead to success in a sport? Traditionally, phys-ed has been approached from a skills based perspective. The trend in education has been to move away from this towards a more conceptual model.
T.G.F.U. This is a learning model derived in the 80’s by Bunker and Thorpe. It focuses on the WHY of strategy ahead of the HOW of skills development.
T.G.F.U. There are four principles to the strategy: Sampling Modification through Representation Modification through Exaggeration Tactical Complexity
Game Types The model categorizes all games into 4 categories: Target Net/Wall Striking/Fielding Territory Invasion
Territory Invasion Example Lets now learn to be better Soccer, Basketball, Football, Lacrosse players.
