  2. 10 Minutes of Magic • Today and tomorrow, for the first 10 minutes of class, your new teachers will be telling you a little bit about the student handbook • You are expected to pay attention, because by Monday, no one can have the excuse of “Oh, I didn’t know!” • Though teachers will be going through sections and answering questions, you are still required to read through the entire student-parent handbook with your parents and fill out the signature form, which is due by Monday August 20th

  3. Student Handbook Part One:Lunch! Thursday 1st Period

  4. Food Frenzy • There are now TWO places to get lunch: • ONE: The Café • Located behind the gym • Dining and snacking options • Open ‘till 5PM • TWO: The MPR (Multi-Purpose Room) • Located downstairs in the new high school building • Options include a salad bar, sandwiches, Panini station, drinks and desserts • Available to both residential and day students • Check it out!

  5. Student Handbook Part Two:Dress Code! Thursday 2nd Period

Uniform YES(es)* • Hair only natural colors • Nothing distracting/ harmful • No “shaggy” hair cuts (must be kept short) • Pants, shorts, and skirts at the natural waste-line (no slippage) • Shoes must be closed-toed and covering heals • No exposed undergarments (including under-shirts) • Clothes are clean • Clothes (skirts, shorts, skirts) are of the appropriate length • Tasteful, simple jewelry

  8. Student Handbook Part Three:Attendance! Thursday 3rd Period

Tardies and Absences* • Tardies: coming to a class late without a note or excuse slip • Repeated tardiness will effect student education and may result in disciplinary action • Absences: missing school or class • Excused: Absence due to extraordinary circumstances (death in the family, severe sickness or injury, religious holiday, natural disaster, etc) • Parents must provide documentation to the attendance office • Unexcused: Absence without excused documentation as outlined in the student handbook • Unexcused absences will result in disciplinary action • Make-Up Policy: • A student who is absent for any reason (excused or unexcused) is required to make up any course work they have missed • A student has the number of days they were absent to make up the missed work *Please see Appendix I pages 4-7 for more information

Pick Up/ Drop Off • General Guidelines: • Page 5; 2nd paragraph, Page 10 of Student Handbook • Student Drivers see page 10 of Student Handbook • All students departing early from school are required to Sign Out at the HS Office Front • Desk who are not part of a school sanctioned activity, NO Exceptions (including Core Golf)

  14. Student Handbook Part Five:Add/ Drop! Thursday 5th Period

See the Front Office • All students are to attend all scheduled classes as scheduled !!! • Add/Drop forms are available at the HS Office Front Desk • required in completed form with parent signature in order to make a Guidance Counselor appointment • Appointments with the appropriate Guidance Counselor may only be made at the HS Office Front Desk upon presentation of the completed Add/Drop document • appointments are only made during lunches, study halls, and after school • Deadlines for Add/Drop are available through the Guidance Department • Elective CoursevsCore Course deadlines will differ • Appropriate Guidance: • 9th and 10th Grade: Dr. Osmond • 11th and 12th Grade: Ms. Santostefano and Ms. Gerena • Residential Students: Ms. Lykins

  16. Student Handbook Part Six:Discipline Code! Thursday 6th Period

The Discipline Matrix • The Matrix of Infractions and Consequences specifically identifies prohibited student conduct and lists the range of consequences that may be imposed for each infraction. When assigning a consequence, or a combination of consequences for misconduct, the Dean, the Director, or the Director's designee shall give consideration to factors such as the nature of the infraction, the student's past disciplinary record, the student's attitude, the student's age and grade level, and the severity of the problem. It is acknowledged that this Matrix is not an all-inclusive list of inappropriate actions on the part of students to which the school may have to respond. In such cases, the best professional judgment of school administrators following a gathering in information and assessment of the facts shall determine the ultimate disposition of the offense.

Academic Honesty • An essential element of the Windermere Preparatory School’s educational philosophy is Virtus - a commitment to honesty, integrity, trust, self-worth, self-discipline, appropriate respect for authority, and concern for others. Windermere Preparatory School’s Honor System helps build character among students and faculty and maintains an educational community in which a code of values is shared. An inherent aspect of a liberal arts education includes the development of Honor, which extends to all facets of life. • The Windermere Preparatory School Honor System covers both academic and social life. Students are expected to take full responsibility under the Honor Code and the Student Conduct and Discipline Code for their behavior and integrity in all academic work, including homework, papers, and examinations, and to confront those who do not. With respect to social conduct, it is expected that students will show concern for others and that problems will be dealt with in a spirit of mutual respect.

  22. Honor Code and Pledge • “I solemnly pledge that I will honor myself, my fellow students, and faculty by acting responsibly, honestly, and respectfully in both my words and deeds; that I will conduct myself in such a manner as to reflect credit on the Windermere Preparatory School community; and that I will uphold the Honor Code and the Code of Conduct of the school.” • “I pledge my word and honor as a student that I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this assignment, nor have I seen anyone else do so.”

  23. Plagiarism • Windermere Preparatory School students are expected to refrain from all forms of academic dishonesty, such as cheating (giving and/or receiving answers), plagiarism, misuse of electronic communication, or other deceitful forms of obtaining or helping others to obtain inflated grades. In addition to receiving all consequences listed below, students found to be in violation of the expectation for academic honesty may lose additional academic and extracurricular privileges.

Skyward • It’s a grade book; it’s an email; it’s a calendar; it’s our new communication tool! • Skyward is the new Edline • Students should check Skyward for messages from teachers and in order to keep up with grades and assignments • You will be learning about Skyward in homeroom and will find out more about how it works shortly

  30. GPA/ Weighting • Two types of weighting: • Gradebook • Course *See p. 10-11 of Student Handbook for more info

Weighting Cont. • Weighting of courses AP/IB/Honors vs non honors level courses for class selection • The easiest class selection is most basic and will slow progression although the grades may be high • The more difficult, higher weighted courses, will allow for better progression, better academic challenge, and an added gpa component, although they are more difficult and may result in lower course grades than a non honors/weighted course • HOWEVER! The end game is college evaluation of course selections, the less honors the less competitive an application (weight grades against difficulty level to find where you belong) • Colleges and WPS encourage a balance between taking the most challenging courses that appropriately address ability level, to maximize gpa through weighting and ability • The WPS Registrar does not provide class ranking, but can provide standing by percentage

  32. Transcripts • E-mail Ms. Lahnston for transcript requests: • Senior Transcripts, Official: special process meet with Ms. Lahnston individually • for specifics, involving release forms and parent signature • Underclassmen transcripts, Unofficial: 2 day turnaround

  35. Expectations • It is a regular reality • It previews and reinforces course materials • It is a weighted part of the quarter grade • All late homework is counted as a zero • It is posted on Skyward regularly and in advance As Nike says, “Just do it”

  37. 15 Minutes of Fame • Arrive on time • Come in proper dress-code • Be quite and attentive for announcements and other events like these, which will occur in homeroom: • S4S (Skills for Success) Presentations • PLP discussions and write ups • Skyward operation information

Clubs/ Athletics • Clubs and athletics are a great way to get involved here on the WPS campus • Our school offers a variety of clubs and activities for after-school and during club periods, such as: • Community Service Organizations: • Habitat for Humanity, SGA • Academic Honor Societies: • French Honor Society, IB Art Club, Latin Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, Choral Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society • Personal Interest Clubs: • Activity Choir, Forensics, French Club, Latin Club, Photography and Yearbook, Pre-Health, Robotics, Thespian Society • In addition, clubs and athletics are great resume builders for college, so GET INVOLVED!
