NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION Created By: Mr. Mossey
NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION Basic Idea: Inertia = Resistance to change in motion. LAW: Objects at rest will remain at rest and objects in motion will remain in motion at constant velocity unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
Newton’s First Law: Inertia When the blue ball starts moving the red ball resists motion. (Objects at rest stay at rest) When the blue ball stops moving the red ball continues motion. (Objects in motion stay in motion)
The truck is stopped by an unbalanced force. Newton’s First Law: Inertia The ladder keeps going! The spaceman stays at rest, until an unbalanced force causes movement.
NEWTON’S SECOND LAW OF MOTION Basic Idea: Force is related to mass and acceleration. Force = (Mass) (Acceleration) LAW: Standard Unit of Force = Newton (N)
Newton’s Second Law: F = ma Large Mass accelerates slowly from same force Equal Force Small Mass accelerates quickly from force
Newton’s Second Law: F = ma Small Force Accelerates same mass slowly Same Mass Large Force Accelerates mass quickly
NEWTON’S THIRD LAW OF MOTION Basic Idea: Forces come in pairs. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. LAW:
Newton’s Third Law: Action/Reaction Man pushes off left (Action) Man travels right (Reaction) REACTION ACTION
Newton’s Third Law: Action/Reaction Reaction force from ground sends bear up Bear applies action force on ground Action Down: Reaction Up
NEWTON’S LAWS SUM UP First Law: Forces are necessary to change objects motion. Forces are related to mass and acceleration. Second Law: Third Law: Forces come in pairs.
