  1. Materials: Penny Playing card Cup Challenge: Stack the objects in the order listed above – penny, playing card, cup. Find as many ways as you can to get the penny into the cup without touching it.

  2. What is the Mickelson-ExxonMobil Teacher Academy? • Professional development experience promoting inquiry-based, integrated math and science instruction. • Rigorous, academic classes. • Focused on force and motion. • Held at The Science Center in Jersey City, NJ. • Forces particpants into a state of “disequilibrium.”

  3. That sounds terrible! WHY would I want to do that? • No, really, why would I give up a week of my summer to go to NEW JERSEY and learn math and science?

  4. Jersey City is across the Hudson River from New York City!

  5. You stay in the Hyatt Jersey City! No room-mates!

  6. The Mickelson ExxonMobil People treat you VERY well! • Opening/closing reception with delicious food and even adult beverages included. • Breakfast and lunch with two snacks each day. • All other meals paid for – no need to save receipts. • Travel expenses, down to mileage to the airport , tips, and baggage check paid for.

  7. You will connect with teachers who love teaching math and science from all over the country.

  8. You will connect with teachers who love teaching math and science from all over the country.

  9. You may get to meet and will most likely get to hear Phil and Amy Mickelson speak.

  10. So many great ideas! A whole flash drive full of them. And a stack of new books.

  11. Inspiration! You will leave this academy knowing how very important you are and how very important STEM education is! – The academy ended with thoughts from Dr. Calvin Mackie. Made in China: 21st Century STEM Leadership From Remedial Reading to Engineer. Build a Nation With People Who Can Do Something!

  12. What is the application process like? • The online application includes just 5 questions and they apply to your philosophy of teaching related to math and science. • You have to describe a recent learning experience in your classroom and what you would do next to best facilitate learning. • You have to explain why YOU should go, given the mission and goals of the academy.

  13. Why do I think I was picked? • I AM passionate about science. Let that show in your writing. • I did include a video clip, though it wasn’t required. That may have helped me get picked. If you’re interested, I will be glad to video you in the science lab with Gretchen – easy as pie.

  14. Why am I telling you about this? • The Mickelson people sent us out with the charge to, “Go and be a virus!” • River Gate’s teachers are fine science and math teachers. Our fifth graders come very well prepared in science. • YOU DESERVE THIS! • Go to www.sendmyteacher.com

  15. One More Thing! • All the lessons and activities I got are on my wiki at the following link: • http://whitneygodfrey.cmswiki.wikispaces.net/Just+For+Teachers • Just for fun, let’s do the Egg drop!
