  1. Spiritual Warfare Series Week 4

  2. The Invisible World

  3. A.) The Reality of the Unseen World

  4. 2 Cor 4:18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

  5. “The unseen world is just as substantial as the world we see. In fact, it is even more permanent and less fragile. If a nuclear device were to explode directly over where you work or live, the buildings, furnishings, wood, concrete, and all those solid things around you would be completely vaporized. However, the invisible world the Bible talks about would remain unscathed.” (Sherman 1990, Spiritual Warfare pg.72)

  6. 2 Important questions to ask every day: “How are my attitudes, activities, and words affecting the unseen world today? “ How is the unseen world affecting me at this moment?” (Sherman 1990, Spiritual Warfare pg.72)

  7. B.) Angels and their role

  8. Serving

  9. Heb 1:14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

  10. Protecting

  11. Psalm 34:7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.

  12. Psalm 91:11-1211 For he will command his angels concerning you    to guard you in all your ways;12 they will lift you up in their hands,    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

  13. Ministering

  14. Heb 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly

  15. Specifically assigned to individuals

  16. Matt 18:10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

  17. Acts 12:13-1513 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”

  18. Not limited by distance and space

  19. Interaction in the affairs of men

  20. 2 Kings 6:15-1715 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.16 “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

  21. C.) Three types of Angels

  22. 1.) Warrior Angels

  23. Dan 10:12-13 12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13 But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.

  24. Dan 10:20 20 So he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come;

  25. Heb1:77 In speaking of the angels he says,“He makes his angels spirits,    and his servants flames of fire.”

  26. a) Our prayers are heard instantly

  27. b) Our prayers move God to deploy angels on our behalf

  28. “We never pray to Angels, but to God, who sends them out in direct response to our prayers.” (Sherman 1990, Spiritual Warfare pg.79)

  29. 2.) Messenger Angels

  30. Daniel…Mary

  31. Luke 1:30But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.

  32. 3.) Worshipping Angels

  33. Rev 5:11-1211 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,    to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength    and honor and glory and praise!”

  34. 4.) Caution against overemphasis

  35. Gal 1:88 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!

  36. Col 2:18Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.

  37. D.) Satan and his kingdom

  38. Ezekiel 28:12-1412 “Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:“‘You were the seal of perfection,    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.13 You were in Eden,    the garden of God;every precious stone adorned you:    carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,    topaz, onyx and jasper,    lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl.Your settings and mountings were made of gold;    on the day you were created they were prepared.14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub,    for so I ordained you.You were on the holy mount of God;    you walked among the fiery stones.

  39. Luke 10:18He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

  40. Isaiah 14:13-14You said in your heart,    “I will ascend to the heavens;I will raise my throne    above the stars of God;I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,    on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;    I will make myself like the Most High.”

  41. Satan literally means “adversary” or “One who stands against or in opposition to”(Buck, Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible 1962 pg. 52)

  42. “ The kingdom of darkness, then consists of three types of beings- Satan, fallen angels, numerous demons and evil spirits.” (Sherman 1990, Spiritual Warfare pg.85)

  43. Ghosts UFO and ExtraterrestrialsNo biblical precedent for unexplained phenomenaWe are simply called to resist evil

  44. James 4:7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

  45. 1 Peter 5:9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

  46. Mark 16:17And these signswill accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons;they will speak in new tongues

  47. Discussion Questions:1)Why is it important to know who it is we are fighting? How can ignorance of the unseen world limit our effectiveness in prayer?2)How did knowledge and awareness of the unseen world benefit individuals like Mary, Elisha or  Daniel? How can knowledge or awareness of the unseen world benefit us as believers? 3) Spend 5-10 min in prayer sharing needs and taking authority over the unseen world.
