History in the Making Concerning the launch of Netscape: “We went from a world where value was created in vertical silos of command and control to one in which value is created horizontally on this platform by who you connect and collaborate with… I would argue that shift from command-and-control to connect-and-collaborate is the mother of all inflection points. … It is the biggest event, I would argue, to change human beings and how they interact, since Guttenberg invented the printing press.” Thomas Friedman, 2010 Inflection Point • The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) can become an “inflection point” for American public education - establishing a common foundation for building excellence and equity for all students.

  4. 2012-2013 School Year-Big Picture Cohort 1: CCSS Implementation • All schools-all grades • Provide overview for all schools on CCSS • Implementation of the following two shifts in all classrooms • Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text (ELA and content) • Focus strongly where the Standards focus • Math Practice 3 • All Schools – Some Grades • Transition grades: K, 1st, 6th , 9th grade to CCSS • Assessments • No changes in CST • Some piloting of formative assessments in targeted grades • Professional Development • Monthly PD covering awareness and District CCSS priorities (all schools) • Targeted professional development for Kindergarten, 1st 6th and 9th

  5. 2013-2014 School Year-Big Picture Cohort 2: CCSS Implementation • All schools-all grades • Implementation of the following two shifts in all classrooms • Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary • Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics within grades • Math Practices - TBD • Grades 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 8th and 10th • Deep understanding of the standards for the grade level • Understanding of how the standards progress throughout grades • Implementation with one ELA unit and one Math Unit • Kindergarten, 1st, 6th and 9th • grades expand to 3 units with increasing text complexity

  6. 2014-2015 School Year-Big Picture Cohort 3: CCSS Implementation • All schools-all grades • Implementation of the following two shifts in all classrooms • Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts • Rigor: Require fluency, application, and deep understanding (Math) • Math Practices, TBD • Grades 4th,5th and 11th • Deep understanding of the standards for the grade level • Understanding of how the standards progress throughout grades • Implementation with one ELA unit and one Math Unit • Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th , 9th and 10th grades expand to all units with increasing text complexity and use of informational text
