  1. Galaxies and the Universe

  2. Agree or disagree? Most of the mass in the universe is in the stars. Most of the mass is in dark matter, such as black holes

  3. Agree or disagree? The big bang theory is an explanation of the beginning of the universe. True, it is one explanation

  4. What would this galaxy look like if we saw it head on?

  5. These are spiral galaxies, like the one we live in.

  6. Why does this galaxy look so bright? • Galaxies are made up of hundreds of billions of stars • The light combines to make the entire galaxy look bright

  7. What galaxy do we live in? • The milky way galaxy

  8. This is what the Milky Way Galaxy looks like from Earth. Band of light

  9. We can’t see the Milky Way like this in Angleton because of light pollution. Light pollution is light that interferes with the view of the stars. Light pollution can come from artificial sources, such as city lights, or natural sources, such as a full moon.

  10. Night sky view from rural area away from city light. Night sky view from urban area away where city light interferes with the view of the night sky.

  11. Galaxies Galaxies contain objects such as planets, comets and asteroids Galaxies also contain dust and gasses We live in the milky way galaxy

  12. Spiral Galaxy • Sometimes called a Pinwheel Galaxy • A flat, rotating disc ofstarsand stellar matter • A central stellar bulge of older stars • Alarge black hole at the very center of the central bulge • Make up 60% of known galaxies, including our own

  13. EllipticalGalaxy • Shaped like an ellipse (oval or egg shaped) • They can be flat or spherical • Make up 15% of known galaxies

  14. IrregularGalaxy • An Irregular galaxy doesn’t have a distinct shape • Irregular galaxies make up 25% of known galaxies
