Transforming the WiDA MPIs By: Katie Cobb Title III Resource Teacher Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
Transformations • “As informative as model performance indicators (MPIs) are for practice, they do not completely capture the range of situations, supports and topics that classroom teachers experience.” *WiDA Teacher Resource Guide, pg 34
Transformations • Though WiDA over 800 MPIs, they can not cover every topic for all 23 states. This is where transformation becomes necessary.
WiDA MPIs • A WiDA MPI has three essential elements: 1. Language Function 2. Example Topic 3. Support
Language Function • Language Function: What do you want the students to do? WiDA MPI: Describe representations of basic operations from pictures of everyday objects and oral descriptions.
Example Topic • Example Topic: What do you want them to know about? WiDA MPI: Describe representations of basic operations from pictures of everyday objects and oral descriptions.
Support • Support: How are you going to help them access the information? WiDA MPI: Describe representations of basic operations from pictures of everyday object and oral descriptions.
MPIs • What if there are no MPIs to match my lesson? • MAKE ONE! We can mold these objectives to match our needs! In essence… transform them.
Transformations Discuss relationships between astronomical objects from Diagrams or graphs In writing, describe the difference Differentiate between winter and spring between cats and dogs using illustrated text with a partner
Connecting Student Actions with Language Domains • Example verbs you can use for addressing the domains of: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing
Transformation • In conclusion, Model Performance are just that: MODELS. • It is up to you to transform them to meet the needs of your students/lessons. • Just remember to include: Language Function, Topic, and Support when designing MPIs
