  1. VCID Notification over ATM Link- Inband / Outband Notifications - Demizu @ SonyCSL Nagami @ TOSHIBA Doolan @ Ennovate Networks Katsube @ TOSHIBA Esaki @ TOSHIBA IETF MPLS-WG Washington DC, December 1997.

  2. VCID Notification Mechanism [Problem of ATM Link] + VPI/VCI label is swapped at ATM switch node => VPI/VCI can not be used for identifier for FEC(Forwarding Equivalent Class) [Solution] + Define VCID uniquely shared between LSR nodes FEC <==> VCID <==> VPI/VCI [Types of cell-in-wire links] 1. Transparent P-P link 2. PVC (Permanent VC) without ATM signaling 3. SVC (Switched VC) with ATM signaling

  3. VCID Notification Mechanism - Conclusion - [Types of cell-in-wire links] 1. Transparent P-P link => without VCID notification 2. PVC (Permanent VC) without ATM signaling => In-band notification 3. SVC (Switched VC) with ATM signaling => Out-band notification => In-band notification (some cases) [VCID Allocation] 1. Unicast : both upstream and downstream nodes 2. Multicast (with pt-pt VC) : both up/down nodes 3. Multicast (with p-mpt SVC) : upstream node

  4. VCID Notification Mechanism 1. Out-band Notification => Control message for VCID notification is exchanged through shared control VC (e.g., signaling channel and default-VC) E.g., “VCID”: draft-demizu-mpls-vcid-01.txt => SVC operation 2. In-band Notification => Control message for VCID notification is exchanged through the label swapping VC (e.g., dedicated-VC) E.g., “FANP”: RFC2129 => (a) PVC operation (b) SVC operation, when BLLI/BHLI can not use for VCID notification procedure.

  5. VCID : Out-band Notification • VCID is offered by the initiator node to map VCID to local VPI/VCI value via shared signaling VC • Unicast / Multicast(w/ pt-pt VC) Stream • Both UpStream and DownSream Initiation • Multicast (w/ pt-mpt VC) Stream • Only UpStream Initiation <= BLLI value has to be the same for all leaf nodes belonging to the same pt-mpt ATM-VC

  6. Procedure with Pt-Pt VC (unicast/multicast) - Out-band notification - Master node Slave Node ATM Forum Signaling 1. with unique BLLI VCID&BLLI 2. 3. associates VCID and VC(BLLI) by a dedicated protocol or within a BIND message 4. associates VCID and VC(BLLI) ACK The VC is ready to be used!

  7. Procedure for Multicast with pt-mpt VC- Out-band notification - downstream upstream • For the first VC ATM Forum Signaling 1. with unique BLLI VCID&BLLI 2. 3. associates VCID and VC(BLLI) by a dedicated protocol or within a BIND message 4. associates VCID and VC(BLLI) ACK The VC is ready to be used!

  8. Procedure for Multicast with pt-mpt VC- Out-band notification - downstream • For the second VC or later upstream ATM Forum Signaling 1. with the BLLI used in the first signaling VCID&BLLI 2. 3. associates VCID and VC(BLLI) by a dedicated protocol or within a BIND message 4. associates VCID and VC(BLLI) ACK The VC is ready to be used!

  9. VCID : In-band Notification • VCID is offered by the initiator node to map VCID to local VPI/VCI value via labeled VC • Unicast / Multicast(w/ pt-pt VC) Stream • Both UpStream and DownSream Initiation • Multicast (w/ pt-mpt VC) Stream • Only UpStream Initiation <= BLLI value has to be the same for all leaf nodes belonging to the same pt-mpt ATM-SVC

  10. Procedure with Pt-Pt VC (unicast/multicast) - In-band notification - Slave Node Master node VCID 1. 2. associates VCID and VC(VPI/VCI) Within BIND mesasge via labeled VC 3. associates VCID and VC(VPI/VCI) ACK via shared control VC The VC is ready to be used!

  11. Procedure for Multicast with pt-mpt VC- In-band notification - • For the first VC downstream upstream VCID 1. 2. associates VCID and VC(VPI/VCI) within a BIND message via labeled VC 3. associates VCID and VC(VPI/VCI) ACK via shared control VC The VC is ready to be used!

  12. Procedure for Multicast with pt-mpt VC- In-band notification - downstream upstream • For the second VC or later VCID 1. 2. associates VCID and VC(VPI/VCI) (VCID used in the first BIND message) 3. associates VCID and VC(VPI/VCI) ACK via shared control VC The VC is ready to be used!

  13. VCID Notification Mechanism - Conclusion - [Types of cell-in-wire links] 1. Transparent P-P link => without VCID notification 2. PVC (Permanent VC) without ATM signaling => In-band notification 3. SVC (Switched VC) with ATM signaling => Out-band notification => In-band notification (some cases) [VCID Allocation] 1.
