  2. When? Where? • Began in 1642 in Nottingham

  3. Who? The “Royalists” or “Cavalier's”: Charles supporters: made up of noble families, Catholics lead by King Charles VS Parliamentarians: Puritans, local militia, farmers, townspeople, eventually alliance with the Scots led by Oliver Cromwell

  4. New soldiers: “Roundheads”: - religious - strong and equipped with new body armour.

  5. Grand Remonstrance • Parliament divided: • Puritans want to abolish monarchy, and churches to be independent of each other. • Presbyterians agreed to king’s limited powers and wanted churches to be organized and worshiped the same Result? Puritans pushed Presbyterians out of parliament  Rump Parliament  Prides Purge

  6. TREASON! • Pride’s Purge: charge the king with treason and making war on his own people • Treason: act of trying to overthrow the king • Charles went on trial  guilty of treason in 1649  executed
