Lexington and concord • In Boston, British General Thomas Gage received orders to arrest Rebel Leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock. • They were both known to be in Lexington. • The British also heard there were large supplies of gun powder in nearby Concord • 18 miles from Boston
April 18, 1775: Gage sent 1000 troops from Boston to Lexington to arrest leaders and to Concord to ransack their supplies. • Wanted to surprise the Colonials and seize the illegal supplies with NO bloodshed.
“The British are coming” • Patriots in Boston were watching for the British to arrive. • 2 horsemen (William Dawes & Paul Revere) • Rode to warn villages and farms of the British in advance.
Lexington • The British arrive in Lexington • Dozens of Minutemen are waiting on them • Shots are fired and 8 men are killed
Concord • On the way to Concord the British are ambushed by guerilla warfare. • Surprised by shots fired from behind trees, walls, and rocks. • Is a spark in the colonial effort. • The idea that they could take down the British through the element of surprise.
What was accomplished? • Great Britain had lost 3 times as many men as the Americans. • Shots fired are known forever as “The shots heard round the world.” • The British reaction serves as motivation for the colonial effort.
