PROJECT TITLE: Design of An Electro-Osmotic Micro Pump MAK492ESenior Design Project 2012-2013Fall Prepared by Levent KARAÇAR and Osman SUBAŞI Project Supervisors: Dr. Atakan ALTINKAYNAK and Dr. Ahmet Can SABUNCU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Istanbul Technical University, Gumussuyu, Istanbul, 34437, Turkey Purpose of the Project: Design of a micro pump driving by electro-osmotic flow STAGES OF THE PROJECT INTRODUCTION ANALYSIS Within the senior design project, we have worked on designing a new micro pump. Micro pumps have critical usage areas like chemistry, medicine and biology. They might be used as a heart in the body in the future. An electro-osmoticpump (EOP), or EO pump, is used for generating flow or pressure by use of an electric field. Therefore, we mentioned about electroosmosis and physics of liquids and we tried to improve the electro-osmotic flow and we have studied on the appropriate designs of its usage areas. Also we attemp to find new methods for fabrication of this new technological device. 1.Collecting information Process information Product information Critical Points Previous and following process step 3.Control System Defining conditions of device Designing control system Defining needed specifications Defining needed equipments 2.Parameters Defining the parameters affecting flow Product/process paramaters Defining parameter values 4.Fabrication Researching manifacture Determining feasible methods Etching CNC DESIGN Electrode Normalized velocity profile of EOF Reservoir General Principle of EO Flow Glass PROBLEM DEFINITION Bolts Energy source of an electro-osmotic micropump is electic. Therefore, the main problem of the project is that to obtain high flow rate with using low voltage range. Because a micro pump is consisting several micro channel, another problem of making a micro pump is manifacturing process. Also it includes electrical connections and so it is important to shape safely. In addition, selection of favorable materials and cost are other critical points. RESULTS For this design all the engineering calculations have completed and appropriate materials have selected. Optimum design have obtained from all these studies. The product has made ready for production. In conclusion, results given in the below have obtained from the pump.
