  4. Enlistment-I enlisted in the Imperial German Navy on April 4, 1910.

  5. Promotion I am promoted to midshipman on April 15, 1911.

  6. I am promoted to acting Sub-Lt. on the SMS Breslau.

  7. World War I Begins

  8. 1914 • When war began the Breslau’s objective was simple-enlist the Ottoman Empire as an ally. As 1914 drew to a close we participated in raiding the Russian Coast prompting a declaration of war.

  9. Promotion and Transfer • The Breslau (now named Midilli) is put into dry dock for repairs. • I am placed in command of an airfield in the Dardanelles.
