  1. Lesson TwelveRecipe for Energy—Cellular Respiration There are four different experiments in this lesson. Will you pick one and do a test, or do this for each experiment? See the NOTE on p 141 of the Teacher’s Manual. Plan on 3-4 days for this lesson. Teacher Tips: Add baking soda to make it solution more blue and ammonia to make it more yellow Larger test tubes make it easier to see Cover fire safety pg 100 Use 25mL not 10mL graduated cylinders Can also use pH paper to show changes Have a control test tube of bromthymal blue

  2. Bellwork Read “Oxidation—One Process, Two Forms” p 99 SG and define the words oxidation, combustion and cellular respiration (Try to resist the urge to define the terms yourself as you go over the bellwork. Use them, but don’t necessarily try to nail them down at this time. Remember, we are engaging, not explaining!) • Objectives • Compare and contrast combustion and cellular respiration • Use a model to show the flow of air and the parts of combustion • Determine the form of energy released in exhalation • Use an indicator to detect waste products in exhaled air

  3. Getting Started pg 100Question What happens if a burning candle is covered with foil? Hypothesis If a burning candle is covered with foil then it will _______ because ______ Materials Candle, beaker, block, bromthymal blue, foil, graduated cylinder

  4. Procedure Safety tips p 100 SG Getting Started p 100 Follow instructions in steps 3-6 Observations- answer questions Step 4 (5 questions) Step 5 (3 questions) Step 6 (3 questions) Answer the original questions and restate hypothesis as a conclusion Next Question (end of day 1?) Conclusion

  5. Inquiry 12.1 Question What happens to the temperature of water when exposed to exhaled air? Hypothesis If water is exposed to exhaled air then the temperature will___________ because __________ Procedure Follow steps 1-4 on p 102 Data/ Observation- answer questions Step 1 (3 ques.) Step 3 (4 ques.) Conclusion Answer original question and restate hypothesis as a conclusion Next Question

  6. Inquiry 12.2 p 103 Question What is a waste product of cellular respiration? Hypothesis If _____ is a waste product then the solution will turn _________ because ____________ Procedure - p 103 Teacher demonstrates this procedure-HEALTH CONCERNS Data Answer question in step 7 – (4 questions) Conclusion Statement of results Next Question

  7. Inquiry 12.3 p 104 Question Can carbon dioxide pass through a membrane? Hypothesis If carbon dioxide is _________ then it will pass through a membrane because ____________ Materials Carbonated water, funnel, graduated cylinder, membrane, string test tube and rack, bromthymol blue, Procedure - Follow steps A-F under step 2 p 104 (use 13 mL of carbonated water) Data Answer questions 1-4 under step F Conclusion Answer original question and restate hypothesis as conclusion Next Question

  8. Reading Spies-Why So Many? p 108 Vocabulary alveoli bronchi capillaries mitochondria cellular respiration oxygen carbon dioxide nutrients energy

  9. Reflections (may spend a whole day answering and reviewing reflection questions) Step 2 Questions A – G Venn Diagram: Combustion and Cellular Respiration (could be homework) (Preparation for lesson 15 p 148 Teacher’s Manual)
