  1. BECOMING HIGHLY EFFECTIVE LEARNING TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS FIRST AND GET YOURSELF UNDERSTOOD

  2. SEEK TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS FIRST AND THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD It is termed as ONE of the SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE by Mr.STEPHEN R.COVEY The habit is “SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS AND THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD” It means ART OF LISTENING

  3. ART OF LISTENING Let us see an example of an OPTOMETRIST. Communication is the most important skill in life. We have spent years in learning how to write, read and speak. But what about LISTENING? - We all typically seek first to be understood. Most people do not listen with the intent to understand , but with the intent to reply. - They are either speaking or preparing to speak.

  4. ART OF LISTENING If you want to interact effectively with others / influence others (your spouse, your child, your boss, your colleague and your customer) YOU FIRST NEED TO UNDERSTAND THEM i.e. YOU FIRST LISTEN TO THEIR PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTIONS with the intent to understand them.

  5. ART OF LISTENING LISTENING has FIVE LEVELS: - IGNORING - PRETENDING - SELECTIVE LISTENING - ATTENTIVE LISTENING - EMPATHIC LISTENING Usually most of us practice first 4 levels of listening. Only few practice EMPATHIC LISTENING – LISTENING WITH INTENT TO UNDERSTAND i.e. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND.

  6. ART OF LISTENING Empathic listening means we see the world the way they see the world. We understand FULLY, DEEPLY, EMOTIONALLY AND INTELLECTUALLY by understanding how they feel. Communication experts estimate that, our communication is represented 10% by words 30% by sounds 60% by our BODY LANGUAGE. In emphatic listening, we listen not only with ears, but also with our eyes and more importantly, with heart.

  7. ART OF LISTENING A good engineer will understand the forces, the stresses at work, before designing a bridge. A good teacher will access the class before teaching. A good student will understand before he applies. The key to good judgement is understanding. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND IS A CORRECT PRINCIPLE EVIDENT IN ALL AREAS OF LIFE.

  8. ART OF LISTENING In office environment, Listen to your subordinates, understand them. Listen to your customers, understand them. Make the human element as important as financial or technical element. When you listen, you learn. And you inspire loyalty that goes well beyond the 8 to 5 physical demands of job. When we really, deeply understand each other, we open the door to creative solutions. Our differences are no longer stumbling blocks to communication and progress, instead they become stepping stones.

  9. LEARNING TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS AND GET YOURSELF UNDERSTOOD FROM TODAY ONWARDS, BEFORE THE PROBLEMS COME UP, BEFORE WE TRY TO EVALUATE AND PRESCRIBE, BEFORE WE TRY TO PRESENT OUR OWN IDEAS WE SHOULD TRY THE POWERFUL HABIT OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE => SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND AND THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD

  10. THANK YOU
