  2. INSTRUCTIONS You are to create an A3 poster on the physical settings of The Merchant of Venice. You must cover all three areas of the setting. Make sure you look at life in the 1590’s. Use the questions as a guide. Try to focus on the areas YOU think are important or find interesting. Look to combine both visual and verbal (pictures and writing) techniques. You have TWO periods!

  3. Venice • What was Venice like in the 1590’s? • Why was it such an important centre? • Who lived there? (Not just Venetians) • Think about everyday life; religion(s); trade; physical appearance.

  4. Belmont Describe what you think Belmont is like. Use the play to provide you with evidence. For this, you will need to infer from the play what you think. Think about the fairy tale aspect we have been discussing.

  5. Jewish Ghetto What rules governed Jews in the 1590’s? What were the rules of the Jewish Ghetto in Venice? What did it look like? What are the basic tenets of Judaism? Why did Christianity vilify Jews to such a great extent? How did this impact their daily lives?
