Mr Utterson– could the “utter” mean something? • A lawyer • “dusty, dreary and yet somehow loveable” • Loyal to old friends • “embarrassed in discourse” – not good at conversation, therefore less likely to make things up. • A reliable source as his character is plain and good.
Mr Utterson’s role • To look after Dr Jekyll’s affairs – is, importantly, in charge of his will. • Since he is loyal and simple, he wishes to protect Jekyll against the obviously evil influence of Mr Hyde. • At first, Utterson suspects Hyde might be blackmailing Jekyll – he has no idea of the true circumstances. • Mr Utterson helps the reader to solve the mystery of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

How is Mr Hyde presented in his first description? Mr Hyde is presented as a merciless and unstoppable man - in the first chapter, Enfield narrates the story of how he witnessed Hyde “trample” a young girl underfoot. Stevenson uses the simile “like a damned juggernaut” to emphasis just how merciless and powerful Mr Hyde is. The word ‘damned’ suggests………. ….Stevenson uses the image of a ‘juggernaut’ because… ………Stevenson chooses a young girl as Hyde’s first victim because… ……….The entire incident is set late at night – Stevenson chooses to do this as………….
