  1. You either sacrifice your comforts or you understand your limits We all want to get better at something. Whether it’s a creative skill or a physical skill, we try to upscale our lives regularly. To do that, we either attend crash courses, or we practice a lot. We push ourselves to get better, and it oftentimes tends to pay up. However, sometimes that routine tends to take a toll, especially when the skill commitment is long-term. When something is to be done over long periods of time, sustainability becomes important. For instance, you are trying to be an avid reader. To successfully do that, you will need to read a minimum of one book per week and that’s a hefty commitment to make. If you don’t sustainably pace yourself, you’ll give up on the task within a month. Additionally, when we talk about outcome-based skill acquisition like preparing for a singing competition in a week, the results won’t be as long-lasting. You may sing your way to a victory in that one competition but that would be a far cry from actually being a skilled singer. It’s not just you. It’s the same for almost everyone. Most of us have been learning using conventional techniques. It’s not really your fault as that’s what you’ve been taught. There just might be a problem with your method.

  2. One approach you can follow is the ‘boot camp approach.’ Military personnel are transformed from civilians to highly skilled disciplinarians using this approach. This technique involves precise instructions decided on by the educator and the learner. Following these precise instructions, the learner strives hard for specific periods of time till whatever you’re learning turns into muscle memory. Also, you need to meet these targets you’ve set for yourself so that keeps you on track along with also stopping you from quitting. Another approach you can try out is the ‘gentle approach.’ It’s when you start slow and continue to learn steadily depending on our grasping speed. In fact, that’s the technique used to facilitate seamless machine learning. You will obviously need a schedule that will need to be meticulously followed. Then you’ll have to set minor challenges for yourself wherein you push the complexity of your challenges bit by bit till the day you achieve the required expertise. To put it simply, go from easy tasks to difficult ones until the day you’ve efficiently learned the skill. Personally, we’d recommend the gentle approach as it involves the most basic aspect of learning which is acknowledgement. Every day when you set these minor targets for yourself, you accept your current level. This also simultaneously also builds character. You also won’t feel guilty for any cheat days you enjoy. You’ll consistently improve with time in such a way that you won’t risk losing those abilities, ever. This method is great for regular people with prior commitments to life. The boot camp method is undoubtedly the best way to upskill yourself. It will take a lot away from you in terms of sheer effort and commitments on your part. You’ll have to work mechanically on a daily basis, no exceptions, no cheat days – just working. Your aspirations and your physical strength won’t oftentimes match up which might lead to feelings of dejection. At the end of the day, you’re learning something new. What technique you use solely depends on your learning ability. You either sacrifice your comforts for a while to receive optimal results, or you understand your limits and take your time upskilling yourself gradually. You either focus on the outcome or the journey. The choice is yours. No matter what you choose, remember to have a positive attitude about the whole thing. You are learning something new, might as well cherish it. As the famous Brian Tracy formula states, a positive attitude will always generate the required performance.
